Troops and police fought rebel snipers in central Santiago several buildings firing on patrols. At least 10 killed and more than 30 wounded over two days as authorities arrest nearly 500, including 40 rebels and 400 opponents of Batista.

Police reported no injuries or citations after a Friday morning crash at Third Street and Highway 287 in Ne. Doris Jean Eason, driving north on Third Street, tried to pull aside but brakes locked causing loss of control and a collision with a parked car.
City Police filed theft charges against Jessie Lee Davis in County Court Saturday morning. Davis is accused of stealing merchandise from the Village Market on November 23. He pleaded not guilty and bond was set at $1,000. Davis remained in County Jail as of Saturday.
President Eisenhower announced from Augusta Ga that the United States will admit 21 500 Hungarian refugees an increase of 16 500 from the previous 5 000 quota. He ordered the Defense Department to arrange rapid transport from Austria and a possible military airlift to replace private charter flights.
Area peace officers from Texas and Oklahoma hunted two speeding murder suspects in a brushy pasture east of Shamrock. A 19 year old, Victor Lee Stephens, died from a neck wound. deputies Marion Nix and Marvin Skinner were wounded. Fugitives used submachine guns and held a posse of over two dozen at bay as searches continued after dark.
Chinese Premier Chou En Lai suggested during a New Delhi news conference that American prisoners held in China could be released before completing their sentences if they behave well. He noted Chinese detainees in U S jails also remained, and hinted he sent a message to President Eisenhower through Prime Minister Nehru seeking mutual justice in a potential release.
NORWALK Conn iP reports a proposal for a three minute silent protest against Soviet tyranny in Hungary may spread Saturday nationwide. Four states Alaska and many cities plan to halt all activity for three minutes at noon Monday. Governors Maine Virginia South Carolina Kansas notified Norwalk of joining. Detroit Atlanta Portland Ore Sacramento and many smaller towns also signaled. Telegrams were sent to 48 governors requesting cooperation. Governor Ribicoff urged Connecticut communities to participate.

The Lions Club carnival raised about 680 dollars from the 21st Treasure Hunt held Friday night. The event drew a large crowd after 6 pm with food and games, Santa Claus arriving escorted by the Fort Worth and Denver Zephyr and distributing gum and candy. About 85 local merchants participated as Town decor and free tickets were distributed by The Index, aiding the Christmas season kickoff.
Erbert Bailey faces another liquor charge in county court after arrest by the sheriff's department and a liquor board official. One pint and three half pints of whiskey were found in Bailey's possession at the time of arrest.
The Stinnett Rattlers versus Merkel Badgers playoff quarterfinal will be at Fair Park Stadium in Childress at 7 30 Friday night. Officials from both schools chose the site at a meeting last night and Stinnett will be the home team occupying the north stands. Tickets go on sale Monday in Childress, Stinnett, and Merkel with reserved seats 1 50 and student 50 cents. no general admission.
A moving firm employee Grover Helms of Hollis Oklahoma was injured when a car driven by Gary Lloyd Dow failed to stop for timber being moved and struck timbers in the 300 block on Avenue D North. Helms was treated and released from Childress General Hospital with a leg injury. Dow did not receive a ticket.
The government raised the interest rate on FHA insured loans from 4.5 to 5 percent effective Tuesday. The move aims to spur financing amid tight money markets and bolster housing construction while VA rates may be sought higher by Congress next year. Albert M. Cole stated the change is needed to prevent a housing downturn and protect jobs.
Six local women finished a home nursing course titled Home Care of The Sick taught by Red Cross instructor Mrs Elma Ehrle. The participants Hazel Robinson Gertrude Williamson Oma Conner Velma Clift A A Bush and L G Ehrle plan to pursue further instructor training. The course covers illness prevention symptom recognition and home health care while saving time money effort and health. Ellenville resident William R. Rose, 51, Harvard graduate and bank president, admitted to turning Robin Hood by manipulating 564 055 dollars of Home National Bank deposits. He surrendered to federal authorities in New York City, posted 25 000 bail, while bank directors assured depositors of solvency and anticipated recovery.
