Luminaries Preserve New Mexico Christmas Light Tradition
The rite of luminarias traces back to New Mexico when communities lit pinon fires guiding the Christ child to Midnight Mass. Sacks and candles gave way to electric versions on tall buildings, yet traditional fires remain beloved. A family in Alaska even crafted candles to avoid shipping costs. The custom, rooted in Santa Fe to Los Alamos, endures as a festive reminder of the night’s symbolism.
