Measuring System Set for Metric Conversion
The Senate passed a bill by voice vote to commit the nation to the metric system. The secretary of Commerce must create a conversion plan within 18 months for pounds and yards to kilos and meters, a task Britain expects to take 10 years. Backers see benefits in jobs, trade, and international ties, but House action remains unlikely this year. The United States is the lone major nation not using the metric system.
