Johnson condemns Bethlehem Steel price hike as unreasonable
President Johnson called Bethlehem Steel’s 5 percent across the board price increase unreasonable and warned it could trigger retaliation by withholding defense contracts. He noted other firms like U S Steel and Armco planned similar raises but avoided mirroring a blanket hike. Johnson said widespread increases could cost consumers hundreds of millions annually and harm inflation and competitiveness.
