Funeral services for Martin Nelson Smith 81 were held at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Henry and J R Chism officiating. Burial followed in Childress Cemetery. Smith died Sunday night after a brief illness. He was a World War I veteran and a longtime Childress County farmer. Survivors include his wife Annie two sons a daughter a brother four sisters and eight grandchildren. Pallbearers named.
Postmaster Littleton Havins announced Childress will receive a new post office larger than the current 6700 square feet, totaling about 9000 square feet. A Department of Post Office representative has visited but no site is chosen yet. The building may cost over 600,000 dollars and a start date could be this fall or mid next year.
Sophomore Trish Hart was named Best Dressed Coed at Texas Tech University in a campus on Thursday contest sponsored by Women In Communications Inc. with 27 entrants. Judges included Matt Malouf Jeane Latham and Morris Wilkes. Delta Delta Delta sponsored Hart. audience ballots formed the fourth judging element.
A county meeting at 7 30 p m Wednesday April 27 at Fair Park Auditorium will discuss the Beef Research and Information Act and a national checkoff plan. Bill Bradley leads the Childress County Beef Development Task Force with Extension Service staff explaining details and answering producer questions.
Galveston Texas early this morning a central five story brick hotel named Central Hotel burned to the ground. Firemen reported 10 to 12 persons were killed or missing in the blaze.
Texas Railroad Commissioner Jim Langdon condemned President Carter's energy proposals as a disaster. He warned the final cost in jobs and economy would be the highest in wartime and urged conservation rather than new supplies. Langdon spoke at a statewide oil hearing amid grim industry mood.
Vaughn B Nowlin of Childress with property under federal bankruptcy in Lubbock was arrested in Childress on Paducah warrants for 10 check charges. He posted 7500 bond per charge after appearances before Justices Bettis and Smith. Sheriff Taylor noted the checks date to his trouble period and bonds totaling 82500 were approved by Sheriff Smith. Nowlin's father resides in Vernon Wilbarger County.

Shreveport former Public Safety Commissioner George D Artois locked in his attic while deputies, including East Baton Rouge Sheriff A Amiss, sought to arrest him for the murder of Baton Rouge ad executive Jim Leslie. A second arrest, Donald Gardner, 39, described as a key link to suspects, marked the investigation’s first significant break.
March 1977 traffic summary shows 23 crashes in five counties with 23 injuries and eight fatalities in the region. Cottle County had the most crashes at six with one injury. A 1974 Capri owned by Barin Blackshire of Childress burned about 1 a.m. Sunday seven miles north of Childress on U.S. 83 as Blackshire returned from Wellington. The cause is undetermined. City of Childress reports one of three Longhorn heifers missing from Fair Park Zoo. City manager Louis Sally says the staff cannot identify the missing animal and is coordinating a search and inquiry.
