Nationalists Say Two Red Vessels Struck By Fire
Taipei Formosa The Ministry of Defense said Nationalist Chinese patrol craft fired on and damaged two Communist gunboats near the Matsu islands. A communique reported an undisclosed number of Nationalist vessels encountered two Red gunboats between Kaoteng in the Matsu group and the mainland at 5 pm to 4 am est. The communique said the Nationalists fired on the Communist craft which fled north. Chinese Reds fired 22 artillery shells at Quemoy 155 miles south of Matsu. Communist artillery on Tateng Island fired 22 rounds at Quemoy but no damage was reported. A Tatao News Agency report said nine new military supply dumps and first aid stations are being set up along the coast opposite Formosa.
