California orange and grapefruit shippers await a new California Arizona Citrus agreement to replace the current one. The AAA drafted the order and copies were mailed to shippers in California and Arizona. Secretary Wallace set October 9 for the public hearing in Los Angeles. Independent shippers fear similar terms may occur, while cooperatives likely approve.
A Bertolla senior partner in A Bertolla & Sons, a Baldwin county Alabama produce shipping firm, died at home near Belforest on September 21 after a short illness. Born September 6, 1860, in Terolo Austria he came to America in 1883 settling in Virginia Minnesota before moving to Loxley in 1902. He helped found the firm in 1920 with his five sons. Surviving are his widow and 11 children, five sons and six daughters, plus a sister. The business will continue as before.

In Cleveland on September 27, the dispute over profits from the recent fruit pool was settled out of court last Friday. Trustees of the Terminal Fruit Pool had earlier filed suit to compel Berkowitz Fruit Company to surrender 12,090.50 in alleged profits from the pool’s operation.

Mitchell Nebraska September 27 members of the Mitchell Valley Community Club voted to leave 10 percent of their crop unharvested to support the newly organized Potato Production Reduction Association. Cranberries steady as receipts remain limited in New York market with Massachusetts quarter barrel boxes trading 2.50 to 2.76 and smaller eighth barrel boxes at 1.40 to 1.50
Frosts across the Red River valley and Wisconsin struck Thursday night, with unofficial lows near 24 in the Red River region and 26 in Wisconsin. Potatoes and vegetables suffered heavy losses, with Wisconsin crop estimates suggesting up to 10,000 carloads may be affected.
Martinsburg W Va Sept 27 A sharp cut in apple freight rates to the lower south markets is likely to take effect by Oct 1. The reduction, about 20 percent, follows approval by the Trunk Line Association and Southern Lines executives. Rates will shift from Seventh Class to Ninth Class, requiring cars to be loaded to a 20 000 pound minimum to qualify.
Moorhead Minn Sept 27 The Red River Valley Potato Shippers Association representing about 80 percent of territory dealers and many large growers has gone on record opposing the federal potato control act passed in Congress. At a meeting in Moorhead secretary A T Brandt presiding, president Herbert A Wieneke noted drought reduced valley acreage and argued the act would curb present conditions and face enforcement challenges from direct handling and local consumption. The group calls the law unreasonable and lacking grower consent to produce a basic agricultural commodity.
Chicago press report states the $1 per cwt apple rate from the northwest to Chicago will begin October 3, changing from the original October 10 date. The adjustment follows Interstate Commerce Commission rules allowing three days notice. Northwestern shippers and trade groups had urged renewal of the $1 emergency rate last year after hearings.
North Atlantic warehousemen convened in New York at the Hotel Pennsylvania to organize a chapter of the Association of Refrigerated Warehouses. G A Mercurio of Providence died recently after a long career in the fruit and vegetable trade. Funeral was held September 21. He built a prominent Providence business with his brother and son and will be succeeded by family partners continuing the firm G A Mercurio & Co.
The Chau tauqua Erie belt from Girard Pennsylvania to Silver Creek New York will begin opening this week. This season’s crop is estimated 30 to 40 percent larger than last year with two weeks delay due to cool weather. Quality is above average and vines show good development despite some neglect elsewhere.
Ottawa reports Canada wide cabbage and onion prospects with Ontario late crop production around 5 200 tons versus 8 800 last year due to heat and drought plus worm damage. Quebec mid season crop near completion with strong demand and eastern track freight. late crop about 25 percent below last year due to planting season weather.
Payette Idaho Sept 27 The Idaho prune deal is drawing to a close with about 1300 cars shipped by Thursday. Total movement expected near 1500 cars with cleanup by mid next week except for a few cars from Twin Falls. Market midweek 55 60 cents for half bushels, some fancy packs selling 6 cents higher.
Nelson Gore of Zimmerman Brothers Baltimore clarifies that he has no link to any local organization misnamed in last week's Packer note. Gore confirms continued long standing involvement with Zimmerman Brothers since 1923 and remains a valued member of the firm’s operation.
Lakeland Florida September 27 The Florida Citrus Commission in a special meeting dropped further plans to curb grapefruit shipments from Florida citing reduced need to raise maturity qualification since industry leaders say eating quality is fair and northern prices reflect large supplies elsewhere rather than Florida fruit. The commission lacks authority to halt shipments meeting maturity tests and blamed legislature for failing to grant power to control shipments or declare a shipping holiday.
Washington D C Sept 27 The Agricultural Adjustment Administration announced a public hearing for October 9 in Los Angeles to consider a proposed order to supplement the marketing agreement for oranges and grapefruit grown in California and Arizona The order would replace a license supplementing the agreement It would limit shipments interstate or foreign and prorate volumes by variety to maintain an orderly flow to market A distribution committee would set weekly allotments with Secretary approval and future committees chosen from industry nominees The expenses would be shared pro rata by shippers and grow ers Complete cooperation with state authorities would be provided under the California Agricultural Adjustment Act
Washington, Sept 27 Agricultural Adjustment Administration sets Oct 8 hearing on Title I of the Warren Potato Act to determine programs to aid potato growers. Discussion will cover marketing agreements, diversion of supply, and potential national allotments with or without payments. Represented growers and others will be invited to attend.
Harlingen Texas September 27 Heavy rains across the citrus district in the lower valley will delay the opening of the grapefruit shipping season. Moisture raises sap flow increasing fruit acidity and delaying maturity tests. Most shippers welcome the delay hoping for larger sizes and higher sugar and juice content if nothing ships before October 16.

The National Rates and Tariffs Committee of American Trucking Associations will meet in Chicago on October 16 after the second annual convention to further study the rate situation before issuing recommendations.
