Government review shows September potato yield across states, with New York securing strong output. Reports from growers and shippers indicate a record national harvest near 4.5 billion bushels, driven by a large acreage in northern regions, while the Pacific coast remains variable and the Northwest shows some decline.
Government September crop report projects 2,016,000 bushels of sweet potatoes harvested this season, down from 87,141,000 last year. Alabama still leads, with 15,800,000 bushels, while Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina follow with substantial totals among other states.
William Thomas doing business as the William Thomas Company, a commission merchant at 2314 Washington Street, filed for bankruptcy in New York with liabilities of 8799 and assets of 200. He owes about 900 on the street and several thousand to shippers including the Franklin Baker Company and a bank, with creditors advertising for claims. His license was revoked last week for unfair dealing with shippers, and the Commissioner of Agriculture seeks creditors who consigned his goods. The bonding company will cover shipper losses. troubles began last March when New York creditors were unpaid. He was not at the store. the clerk said he was up state among shippers, then returned and arranged installment payments to local creditors, paying only a few.

Chicago Sept 20 Reports from growers and shippers in key states indicate a good fall crop for winter use. Government August 15 projections show Massachusetts New York Pennsylvania Ohio Michigan and others contributing to a total of about 15 376 000 bushels, with acreage smaller yet yields larger. California acreage not counted in totals and overall harvest underway across major states.
New York market reports show acreage totals for New York state at 9100 this year, 9800 last year, with yield at 2,822,000 bushels versus 2,881,060 in 1917. Trade leaders discuss 5 per cent damage rule and transport company responsibility, with emphasis on shipper marking and 5 per cent unjustified damages. Washington officials warn butter distributors that profits must align with defined rules, with enforcement actions for rule violations.
Government and industry reports show frost nips in the potato crop but not enough to threaten supply. Minnesota leads in output this year with about 32.8 million bushels, up from 23.6 million last year and 16.8 million in 1916, while condition readings sit at nine. Ralph Merritt, federal Food Administrator for California, announced Tuesday an order requiring a San Francisco grocer and vegetable dealer to post a placard listing the prices paid and the prices charged for staple items. The measure, effective September 28, aims to protect the public against profiteering.
Western Massachusetts yields are estimated between 4000 and 4200 ears with some shippers calling the crop normal and others better than 1917. The state government reports 95 percent of normal condition for September 1 with 4700 acres and a 2202000 bushel statewide yield, while Ohio shows 84 percent of normal with 6000 acres and 2490000 bushels. Washington Sept 20 The American Railway Express Company filed for a further 10 percent rise in excess rates with Director McAdoo. The plan requests a flat 110c per 100 pounds on existing commodity rates and advances in first and second class rates per 100 pounds.
Washington September 20 official Florida crop estimates put oranges at 5,000,000 boxes and grapefruit at 2,900,000. The gains from last year are 44 percent for oranges and 31 percent for grapefruit. Advance sales of Florida oranges unofficially reported at 3.50 dollars per box.
Washington DC September 20 a War Trade Board order blocks export licenses for honey to foreign countries including Canada. The rule restricts shipments abroad pending further policy actions and may affect producers and distributors nationwide.
A strike by chicken unloaders and truck drivers in Jersey closes as Cyrus Miller and the Federal Food Board back W J Boyle. Boyle, a Secret Service agent, has cleaned up thefts in Hoboken yards, beating thieves and convicting two. Receivers agree to resume work after Miller refuses to remove Boyle.
Washington report on stocks shows September 1 egg storage at 6,237,118 cases, down 6.7 percent from a year ago. Creamery butter totals 101,838,897 pounds, a 6.7 percent drop, while poultry stocks reach 22,912,429 pounds, 58.6 percent below last year. Eggs in 499 houses are 185,692 cases lower than in 338 houses last August. Butter in 420 houses September 1 is 16,297,925 pounds higher than August 1 in 310 houses.
New York Sept 20 Last Tuesday the Food Administration asked the New York Mercantile Exchange to announce a change in the profit allowed on 60 percent storage butter, allowing 20 profit on butter stored in May June and July. The move follows earlier limits of 2c for May and 1c for June and July, and aims to curb price rises in fresh butter while market participants seek clearer guidance on quantities commandeered and future pricing.
Louis A Federer of St Louis, a wholesaler and broker, had his Food Administration license revoked after failing to remit payment for a carload of cantaloupes. The nonpayment violated an order from Washington. Federer reportedly left St Louis for California three weeks earlier. details were provided by E O Miller, president of the St Louis Fruit and Produce Exchange.
Government officials failed to make a case against J. D. Key and W. F. Maxwell charged with using the mails to defraud. United States Judge Sater dismissed the men. Warrants were sworn out in Municipal Court on charges of embezzlement. They pleaded not guilty when arraigned. The offense involved a consignment of produce from Isaac Ashbaugh of Junction City, Missouri, with no settlement made. Army October potato requirements total 258,332 cwt, 66,132 cwt above September. Onion needs for October are 23,952 cwt, 6,832 cwt above September.

Mike Hellman of Phillips & Sons gathered apples for returned soldiers from France. His daughter Belle Helman, with Oppenheim Collins & Co, led a patriotic committee that, with her father, organized steady fruit donations. By Thursday, enough apples to feed a small army were collected for the injured soldiers, ensuring pies and fresh fruit.
The New York Central Railroad bans night deliveries at Pier 31 and redirects to St. John's Park. Fruit and vegetable track deliveries start at 10 p.m., with butter and egg shipments long using the park. Shippers must bill peaches to St. John's Park to receive stock there.
Los Angeles reports weekly citrus movements with 187 cars of oranges and 70 cars of lemons shipped Sept 10-16. Totals for Southern California reach 13,597 cars of oranges and 5,435 cars of lemons, with no change in Central and Northern California. Season grand total reaches 21,887 cars.
New York forecasts a 274000 ton pickle crop for the season, with 29500 acres planted and a 79 percent condition as of September 1. Wisconsin places second in output with 106640 tons from 12400 acres, condition at 88 percent, with detailed carload reports from towns like Almena Appleton Junction and Beloit.
