Fewer Potatoes In Michigan This Year
Michigan faces a reduced potato harvest with estimates of 6.0 to 8.6 million bushels cut from total production. Verne H. Church predicts about 30.0 million bushels, down from 37.8 million last year, while drought and frosts have trimmed yields in several districts. Western regions remain near normal with improved quality expected if frost is avoided. A 15 percent smaller planted area and late shipping season impact prices and market outlook across the state. Separately, Michigan Trust Company seeks ICC permission to abandon 30 miles of track on the Manistee and Northwestern line from Bendon to Empire due to unprofitable maintenance.
