Grand Rapids reports two killing frosts last week severely damaged potatoes and truck crops across northern Michigan. Many thousands of acres of late potatoes were prematurely killed, yielding few tubers of commercial size. Vines and fields froze, with some areas blackened, and overall outlook downcast for growers and shippers. Prices stayed largely steady as carlot warehouses remain closed while onion harvest progresses and Michigan’s total onion crop nears three million bushels despite drought and late maturation.
