Brief History of Citrus Fruit Growing in the Southwest
Washington, D. C., Sept. 4. The citrus industry expanded largely in the last 30 years with ongoing public and private research shaping better cultivation and orchard management. California’s citrus roots trace to Franciscan missions in the 18th century, with the nucleus formed at San Gabriel Mission and William Wolfskill’s 1841 Los Angeles orchard. The Southern Pacific and Santa Fe railways spurred commercial growth, the Washington Navel orange emerged at Riverside around 1878, and the industry now spans 268,703 acres with about 24 million trees across three climatic districts: Southern, Central, and Northern California.
