New York Sept 2 The Miker Cummings Co Inc has filed with the Albany Secretary of State to raise capital stock from 50000 to 300000. New officers elected Cecil M Cummings president Arthur T Miller vice president Clifford C Gerow secretary and treasurer. Cummings and Miller of Brawley have been in New York and left for California, Cummings expected to be away about a month.
Colorado growers and shippers complain freight and express rates are too high. Distances of 100 miles or more push express charges beyond what growers can earn from produce. Cantaloopes from Manzanola 95 miles away sell at 90 cents per crate but face 93 per crate express fees to Canon City. The district grows apples plums tomatoes grapes celery lettuce and other produce affected by the high costs.
Rochester New York September 2 The cabbage market in Western New York is very active with prices improving but not to pre slump levels Dealers pay up to 30.4 per ton to growers for heads averaging two and a half pounds and shipments on an f o b basis have recently been at 35 per ton
Martin Scanlon of Boston, proprietor of the International Fruit and Product Exchange at 27 Fufton Street, has notified creditors he cannot pay. He is operating on a cash basis and says he will pay when he can.
Letter from Oneco Florida grower detailing a season of losses due to high freight charges. He cites gross sales of 102 618.10 and freight costs of 66 166.26 against net proceeds of 33 416.53, leaving a loss of 6 156.25 after freight. Warns many growers may quit the industry without relief.
The New York potato market remained unsatisfactory with heavy receipts and price declines. Jersey and Long Island stock dominated, 150 pound bags selling from 3 to 4.50 for No.1 and as low as 1.60 for No.2, while Southern stock ranged 2.50 to 4.25 per barrel. long Island bags 4.26 to 4.60. Sweet potatoes held steady with No.1 at 4 to 4.76 per barrel and Jersey sweets 1.60 to 2.25 in baskets.
The J. R. Rowe firm at 178 West Street, a vegetable jobbing house run by John R. Rowe and brother Henry, has shut down leaving about $10,000 owed to creditors. Police note no stock remains, only a truck at the door, and Rowe has not appeared since last Saturday. Miles & Co deny financing ties while admitting small defaults. assets appear limited to a truck and a five year lease on 173 West Street, valued higher than current estimates, with fears the lease and truck may be in Rowe's wife name.
New York and Hartford reports say a government ruling allows every householder in the United States to make 200 gallons of wine annually for personal use on their premises. No alcohol content restrictions are specified, but makers must file a formal notice with the Internal Revenue.
Concord grapes from Michigan arrive in Chicago with good quality fruit and rising movement expected by midweek. Michigan shippers quote 20 to 110 dollars per ton as buyers hold back. Locally 16 ounce baskets move 36 to 40 cents, mouldy stock 25 to 20 cents, sixteen pound clusters bring 75 cents to 3.45 dollars per crate.
W T Gerow of Smith and Holden left New York for California with Mrs Gerow and their daughter. They will stop in Chicago for a day and expect to reach Los Angeles by mid next week to lead the firm's California office. Willis Holden recently returned from travels in the Northwest and a vacation with Mrs Holden and their daughter in the Canadian Rockies.
