Dealers Protest Proposed Adverse Laws In Chicago
About 150 butter egg fruit and produce men appeared before the Chicago city council judiciary committee to oppose bonding and licensing laws for produce and commission merchants. They argued the ordinances were discriminatory and would empower officials, jeopardizing trade. Five speakers outlined the objections while the committee gave a hearing without discussion or commitment. The measure would license and bond each commission merchant and allow license revocation for various alleged misdeeds including speculative buying and improper accounting. The group favored provisions on fraud and sanitary conditions but opposed licensing clauses.
