Washington D C Oct 21 American Consul at Habana Harold S Tewell says Cuba will plant fewer tomatoes potatoes peppers and cucumbers this year with about 20 percent less tomato acreage than 1937 The Lima bean crop may match last winter while early tomato output could be similar to last season The decline stems from weak export prices and scarce financing. sugar cane and tobacco income drop further reducing Cuban farmers appetite for extensive planting.

National committee plans to press a state unfair sales act next legislative session in Illinois and other states. At a Chicago meeting 75 to 100 executives from grocers and chains endorsed a model law prohibiting loss leader merchandising as harmful to the industry. Endorsements come from major associations with officers Grimes Masemen Christianson guiding the effort.
Chicago date Oct 21 C H Weaver & Co marks its 75th year in business as a leading firm in fresh fruits vegetables butter eggs poultry and produce since 1863. From a small start on Dearborn Street the company grew through boom and busts to become a major industry figure. The history traces founder C H Weaver and his uncle H H Marsh and a transition from farm farmer connections to a large city commission house serving growers and customers.
Los Angeles Oct 21 Wide interest from northwest trade groups in the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association convention set for Los Angeles January 24 27 was reported by A M Klein of Consolidated Produce Co honorary chairman of the convention committee on a three week trip to Oregon and Washington. He says annual sessions grow more influential in linking perishables producers shippers and distributors to tackle industry problems. The northwest emphasis on fruit and vegetable crops has heightened attention to association activities. Informal meeting at the Terminal Club with convention executive chairman C H Jandt and secretary Ross H Gast followed to receive progress reports.
Riverhead Long Island cauliflower shipments jumped to 25,000 to 80,000 crates daily as warm weather and larger supplies eased trade. Prices fell 30.66 cents per crate to 60 to 85 cents, while carrot movement also increased with 43 on Monday 20 Tuesday and 13 Wednesday shipped to interior points at F O B prices 60 to 96 cents. Brussels sprouts remained light with about 300 crates daily selling at 1.76 to 2.25 for 16s and 2.50 for 32s.
Fresno Calif Oct 21 With Tokays rapidly cleaning up and this week probably marking the end of that deal in the Lodi area Emperors were becoming the principal table variety in trade interest The juice grape deal continued on a comparatively steady basis in producing districts with eastern markets absorbing shipments to date and delivered prices showing no appreciable change from a week ago The principal concern in the wine grape situation was the wine grape prorate which suffered at least a psychological setback early this week when Superior Court in Sonoma county issued a permanent injunction against the prorate commission restraining it from enforcing the terms of the prorate program in the case of a Sonoma county grower However Co J Carey prorate type agent asserted that the injunction had no permanent significance inasmuch as the program would continue generally and appeals would be taken to higher courts on the Sonoma county injunction of private bank and fight off mine grapes are led to be diverted into stor tooks of brandy and high hypof was unchanged by the court devastation Mr Carey stated While eastern shipments of juice grapes have shown an increase the last few weeks Interstate passings to date are far short of this period last year and stocks moved to out of state markets are around 4000 cars less than this date in 1987 Through Tuesday Alicante passings were 1183 cars against 3356 to the same date last year Carignanes 891 against 918 Zin Continued on Page 1%
Cleveland officials and local trade leaders met to address the trucking issue. About 44 dealers favor eliminating out of state truck shipments, with eight opposing. A 24 hour depot will inspect loads to meet state rules, beginning Monday, as state inspectors begin checks for registration and license compliance.

Kansas City October 21 prospectus of the United Fruit and Vegetable Marketing Institute outlines aims for a national trade group. It calls for better marketing principles, uniform grades, standardized packs, reduced terminal cartage costs, labor representation, closer coordination among shipping sections, and unified actions among diverse producers. The headquarters are planned for Washington.
Washington officials and trade members gathered at the Washington hotel to honor W. G. Meal, newly appointed head of the U S Department of Agriculture Division of Fruits and Vegetables. The informal dinner fostered frank talks and pledged cooperation to improve trade operations and practices. Attendees included N L Allen and other representatives from growers, shippers, exporters, and domestic receivers and distributors.
Washington, Oct 21. Plans for the 47th annual convention of the National League of Wholesale Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Distributors are nearly complete at Cavalier hotel Virginia Beach. Advance hotel bookings, many by growers and shippers from southern producing regions, mark a new record. Frank O Urie president, spoke in Washington for William G Meal’s testimonial dinner and joined Joint Council wages hours law discussions.
On Oct 21, a mayoral committee and a trade group discussed feasibility of a new terminal for marketing fresh fruits and vegetables in New York. No definite plan yet. the mayoral panel aims to present a concrete proposal within two weeks, with further meetings to follow after its release.
Pahokee Oct 21 The fall bean crop in the Everglades region began moving toward market with the first carlot shipped from a local packing house. If this pace continues daily carlot shipments are expected to begin this week. Reports indicate 10 000 to 12 000 acres will be planted for early fall and winter marketing as weather remains favorable.
At a statewide meeting in St. Paul Commissioner Charles Ommedt heard testimony from potato growers on tightening inspection laws and possible advertising Minnesota potatoes. Participants urged extending the compulsory inspection to truck shipments and supporting an advertising program with stronger grading enforcement.
In Sanford Florida on October 21 the Agricultural Adjustment Administration said Florida celery growers voted to terminate the federal marketing agreement in effect last year. The pact ended last Saturday and a push to launch a national advertising campaign for Florida celery this winter and spring is under way with several leading growers backing the effort.
The Growers and Shippers Association of Idaho led by secretary Austin B. Anson asks Western railways for blanket rate reductions on fruits vegetables and melons from Idaho and eastern Oregon to California Nevada Oregon Washington and Utah. Proposed cuts 25 to 60 cents per group with three transit stops and unloading fees up to 6.93 per stop.
Washington reports onion production in the late states for October 1 at 11,015,000 sacks 100 pounds each, up from 10,383,000 in 1937 and above the 1927-36 average of 9,894,000. Central and eastern states see heavier after-harvest waste and Massachusetts and New York report larger losses due to late September rains and processing. Continued details on Page 4.
Kansas City officials move to amend the PWA grant request for the new regional Produce Terminal Market. The original 46 percent grant was based on $800,000. the amended plan reduces to a grant on $786,800 after deducting work and engineering costs already completed. Construction of the foundation for one of five buildings has begun using Ten-Year Plan bond funds. Work could continue through winter if approved.
