Commander claims Florida United Growers Inc and Firm Jenkins represent the Organization Department of the Federated Fruit and Vegetable Growers of New York. He alleges Florida United employees block committee work, keeping controversy alive amid ongoing gossip.
In Haines City on Oct 12, the Committee of Fifty urged prompt appointment of a general manager for the Florida Citrus Growers Clearing House. They warned against any changes to the set up without advisory board approval and pressed for open covenants and fast progress in handling the citrus crop. The Jacksonville controversy over a manager’s appointment tied to Florida United Growers, Inc. involved J. W. Jenkins and Dr. Burdette G. Lewis, with communications between Lewis and Commander publicized as tensions rose.
Orlando announces the Interstate Commerce Commission has denied petitions by Western Trunk Line carriers and Kansas Missouri Southwestern lines to reopen and rehear the Florida shippers rate case. The Growers and Shippers League and State Railroad Commission opposed reopening after a Washington conference. Also noted is Glenn’s I C C A679 citrus rates effective November 9 to Virginia, New England and Western Canada. no word on Kansas Missouri or intermediate territory rates.
Winter Haven Florida October 12 No move has been made by the board of directors to appoint a permanent manager of the Clearing House. J Curtis Robinson remains as temporary manager under a managing committee of C C Commander R W Woolfolk and W H Mouser.
Structural steel work for the new Pittsburgh platform, begun last Thursday, progresses toward the upper end where railroad and auction offices will sit. The current office building intrudes on platform ground and must be torn down before completion. The platform should be usable before year’s start. Afterward, tract yards will be remodeled to make the Pittsburgh produce terminal on par with major centers.
Yakima Washington October 12 heavy culling in the Yakima Valley Apple market with sizes running small. Jonathans price about ten cents a box lower while late varieties hold steady. Winesaps seen as reliable. much fruit diverted to by product plants. overall tonnage below earlier expectations due to culling.
Sacramento Calif Oct 12 Plans for the adoption of legislation to provide machinery for the legal enforcement of the grape clearing house idea for grape shipments were discussed Saturday at a conference between Donald D Conn managing director for the California Vineyardists Association Governor C C Young and G H Hecke director of the State Department of Agriculture Mr Conn declared that his proposals for legislation are more or less in a nebular state at the present time but added that If the clearing house is to be the solution for the distribution.
Dates named for two Canadian fruit and vegetable jobbers conventions. Eastern Canada Fruit and Vegetable Jobbers Association meets January 9 to 11, 1929 in Ottawa. British Columbia Fruit Growers hold January 22 to 24, 1929 in Vancouver. Western Canada Fruit Growers’ Association date pending. Last year’s Regina gathering extended Vernon invitation.
Yazoo City Mississippi October 12. L H Thomas who has run fruit and vegetable lines in various parts of the country is here and reported to be preparing to boost his activities again. His past operations have not always been spoken of favorably.

A plan to transfer the $300 million annual express business from the American Railway Express Company to a new Railway Express Agency Inc. was approved by railroads handling 75 percent of the nation’s express traffic. W. B. Storey, W. W. Atterbury, P. E. Crowley, and Carl R. Gray will form and acquire the express company, owned entirely by 86 railroads.
The United States Department of Agriculture slashed its October potato forecast to 483,722,000 bushels from 466,815,000 last month. Prospects remain larger than last year, with reductions in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado, Idaho and Washington, but increases in Maine, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota and Utah. Production figures cover North Carolina through Texas for late crops, with combined outputs noted for several southern states.
Movements in potato harvests and cabbage, apples, pears, and grapes shape regional markets from Michigan to California. Reports note smaller European apple crops, heavy culling in Yakima apples, rising potato storage in Michigan and New Jersey, Florida citrus rate talk, and government estimates adjusting onion, cabbage, lettuce, and peach outputs for the coming season.

Secretary and manager R H Pennington announced the plans this week. An Express Strike Ends in New York. The American Railway Express Company strike, which halted express traffic in metropolitan New York for nearly two days, ended as the workers voted to return to work.
New York on October 28 the Merchants Association hosts a Food Ma Council session to discuss financing given to growers by commission merchants and wholesale receivers. Earl R. French notes rising loans, discussions focus on whether this system causes market glut, overproduction, and price disparities prompting losses and possible bankruptcies.
Department of Agriculture survey of the Lower Rio Grande Valley and Corpus Christi-Robstown area reports increased acreages for most fall crops. September rains improved soil conditions, with cabbage seed beds above average. beans peppers and eggplants are the notable exceptions.
Florida citrus production manager A H Blanding released an estimate placing this season's yield at 17 783 000 boxes with grapefruit about 7 000 000. Last year 13 635 360 boxes. State totals include 1 150 000 Hillsborough 1 404 000 Pinellas 5 500 000 Polk and 1 390 000 Indian River in the readout. Storms damaged some areas, notably Polk and Indian River.
The first Florida grapefruit of any consequence reached New York this week with about 19 cars sold by Thursday. Auction prices ranged from 2.75 to 9.75 per box, most fruit selling around 4.50 to 8.50, and ordinary stock bringing 3 to 3.50. A half car of Florida oranges also sold, bringing 1.75 to 4, mostly 2.65 to 3.60. The trade expects about 25 cars of Florida grapefruit on Monday.
Clement R. Winslow 51 president and general manager of C H Robinson died suddenly at San Benito Texas on a business trip. He had suffered heart disease and high blood pressure but pressed on in work. A Nash-Finch vice president and a leader in the fruit and vegetable trade, he rose from humble beginnings through diligence and strong judgment. Continued on Page 11.
Exports of apples from the United States and Canada for the week ended October 6 amounted to 212 772 barrels and 387 081 boxes. Year to date exports total 778 790 barrels and 1 505 882 boxes, versus 413 711 barrels and 655 447 boxes at the same date last year.
