A Missouri apple shipper filed a civil suit against A. J. Panagakos & Co of Chicago over a car of barreled Jonathans sold Sept 25 at 5.10 per barrel. An initial 300 payment was made and a second 465 was stopped after loading. Panagakos claimed the apples unsatisfactory, while Evans says Panagakos witnessed packing at Lake City Mo. The suit follows earlier disputes and a Fulton Market case against Panagakos & Co.

Ohio Rome Beauty Apples Going Into Storage
Growers in Proctorville and other upper Ohio Valley districts harvest the Rome Beauty crop as Carlota shipments rise. Storage space is tight with contracted space nearly full and apples sold earlier in the season at 3.50 to 5 a barrel. The crop runs about 60 percent normal for Rome Beauties and 75 percent for other winter varieties.

Death of Wilmer O. Davis of New York
Wilmer O. Davis of the firm W. O. & H. W. Davis fruit and vegetable receivers at 105 Murray Street died suddenly at his home in New York City Monday morning. He was about 65, born in Maryland, and came to New York 45 years ago to work for his brother Shanley Davis. After family deaths the firm became O. P. Davis & Brother, later run by Wilmer and Winter Davis until Winter’s death. Oscar Davis died recently. Wilmer was the last surviving brother. Surviving wife, funeral at 2211 Broadway Wednesday at 3 p.m., burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Examiner Rules California Fresh Fruit Rates Reasonable
In New York on Oct 10 the Interstate Commerce Commission’s examiner Earl M. Steer found California fresh deciduous fruit rates in carloads to Eastern transcontinental groups reasonable and dismissed the California Growers and Shippers Protective League complaint against the Southern Pacific and other carriers. He noted some group rates appeared high but that overall the rates are reasonable and not unjustified when compared with Northwest and other producing regions. He suggested further consideration of Group J rates and cautioned against lowering rates to Groups A to D as it could hurt Eastern grape growers.

Concord Grapes Begin Moving From Michigan
Chicago October 10 The early part of this week saw the first commercial movement of Michigan Concord grapes as the crop, a month late, colors up after favorable weather. Prices ranged around 70 dollars a ton for shipments and 1 cent per pound in jumbo baskets, with smaller baskets at 35 cents. Certain vineyards were contracted earlier at about 50.55 a ton.
