Augusta November 25. Market Division Chief Charles M White of the Maine Department of Agriculture warns carrot buyers that federal state inspection slips and stickers are being faked by private individuals to mislead shipments. He notes private inspectors imitate official forms, while federal state certificates remain the trade standard and legally valid. He says official inspection protects buyers and boosts the merchandising program.

Americus, Ga November 25 Lee M. Hansford of Sunny Hill Fruit Farm says a Chicago man named S. Turkin bought a truckload of pecans on Thursday night November 10 for 607.27 paid by check that returned unpaid from Austin State Bank Chicago. Turkin's account is closed there and checks have bounced. The truck had an Illinois license tag and pecans tagged with Hansford's name.

Salt River Valley fall lettuce season opens with early shipments

Phoenix reports the Salt River valley fall lettuce season starting with five firms shipping cars Monday and seven more on Tuesday. Thanksgiving day loadings were light and Friday estimates predict 20 to 26 carloads. Through next Saturday about 250 carloads are expected. Prices open at 3.50 per crate on fives in carrots FOB Phoenix and a dollar lower for the bases. Frosty nights slow maturity and smaller sizes. A. M. McDowell, federal Market News reporter, will issue a weekly summary starting Monday.

Below Freezing Point Hits Lower Rio Grande Valley Crops

Temperature dropped slightly below freezing at valley points early Friday damaging tomatoes beans peppers and other tender vegetables. Citrus fruit was not damaged though Willacy county and other dryland areas faced a serious onion and vegetable outlook despite a light Thursday rainfall.
