Purdue extension member C L Burkholder explains apple storage guidance for Indianapolis readers. Apples should be picked before excessive ripening and stored in an open shed overnight then moved to a cool cellar with minimal openings. Pack in paper lined barrels, cover, and bury with straw and dirt in well drained ground to prevent freezing while preserving best varieties for winter through to spring.
