Live poultry trading remains extremely active with 76 cars received by Wednesday night and another 30 to 40 expected. Late quotations show heavy fowl at 14c, western fowl 13 3/4c, chickens 13 3/4c, cocks 10 1/2c, geese 14c, ducks 11c, and turkeys 18c. Dressed poultry supplies were heavier and markets largely unchanged amid quiet trading.
New York reports rising butter receipts with 1,492,056 packages from May 1 to last week, up from 1,428,011 a year earlier. Weekly receipts totaled 39,963, versus 41,867 the prior year, with daily gains and declines noted. Associated Warehouses on November 1 show 52,663,000 lbs stored across forty large warehouses, up 8,667,000 lbs from a year ago, based on thirty-two warehouses.
In Chicago butter markets this week a firm tone and rising prices followed light fresh-cream receipts. Quality arrivals met strong demand with storage stocks showing a sizable year-on-year surplus, though overall holdings fell from October 1. By midweek, extras rose and other grades gained, with ladies and packing stock staying near 24 to 29 cents. Thursday’s sale price for ladies eased to 24 1/2 cents.
Terre Haute Ind Nov 8 J L Werden who failed weeks ago is said to be paying off 100 cents on the dollar. His liabilities were not a great deal smaller than his assets and it is believed he went into bankruptcy to avoid judgments. Werden is eccentric and has faced complaints about his methods. He operated retail stores in Terre Haute and nearby towns and now works for a Chicago firm managing a chain of stores.
Indianapolis reports the National Association of Food Commissioners completed a draft cold storage bill for many states. Chairman IL E Barnard Indiana state food and drug commissioner notes the bill mirrors Indiana law but extends legal storage limit from nine to twenty months.
In Chicago on November 8 the vegetable market showed an easy tone as receipts lagged and demand cooled. Lettuce and celery varied in quality with New York stock guiding prices, tomatoes rose on light supply, while beans and eggplant sold slowly. Hickory receipts small, shell barks 1.50 to 1.75 per bushel, walnuts 7 cents per bushel, cutternuts 3 cents per pound.
