Production of string beans will be increased in Rogers. The crop, once a sideline, netted growers 30000 in the Rogers trade area this year, with ten other towns in the county shipping beans in large quantities. The season continues, marking the longest growing period in years and new markets have been found. The crop is expected to become a leading one.
Chicago notes cabbage prices held firm with top stock around 20.22 a ton f o b Wisconsin as most supplies move to warehouses. Buyers from Missouri and Kansas show interest while Colorado supplies fill trade needs. Local dealers expect higher prices with coming winter weather. Martin Tohrner of Franklin Tennessee and Otto L. Amoreno returned from extended trips through the North and California respectively.
Cargo of Holland onions arrived in New York this week from Chicago firm Carl & W. L. Piowaty Inc. The 100-pound bags under the Radio brand moved at 3.76 per bag. Packing and loading were supervised in Holland by M. Piowaty before shipment.
Havana reports a presidential decree ending duties on seed potatoes in natural form, effective Nov 5, easing costs for growers. Cuba plans a record harvest of about 1.66 million bushels, with local demand expected to absorb most production February to May, while Canadian imports face $2 per 100 kilos duty seasonally. County Agent Steffani expects normal piners and tomato yields of 109 to 125 crates per acre totaling 400 to 600 carloads before January 1.
Philadelphia reports Florida grapefruit trading at 2.90 to 3.80 per box early in the week while Florida oranges sold 5 to 7 per box with fair trading. By week’s end orange prices rose and grapefruit sales slowed as demand shifted.
Martin County Florida sees a surge in truck crop planting after storm conditions. W T Nettles Gainesville district agent will visit Stuart to review progress with C P Heuck and discuss conditions. An all day meeting with truck crop specialists is planned in Cane Slough district after the rush season. A Red Cross carload fertilizer distribution was made in Palm City Farms.
County commissioner R. L. Walt reports extensive track planting in the area with remaining fertilizer to be applied to citrus groves after planting rush ends. He notes trees are recovering well post storm and Palm City Farms roads are fair as farmers work from sunrise to sunset to sow seeds and take advantage of the current season in the soil.
M J Dark Sons relocate to a new 206 by 60 foot fruit and vegetable handling building on Wealthy avenue near the Pere Marquette tracks in Grand Rapids Michigan. The facility includes a full basement five modern banana rooms each holding a carload and track access for five cars at the door with a private driveway on the opposite side.
