Louisiana citrus crop to be small due to cold freeze and drought
New Orleans reports Southern Louisiana will yield a comparatively small citrus crop this year. Weather from last winter through spring killed many blooms and trees, followed by a long drought, with an estimated 75 000 to 100 000 boxes of good fruit. Quality expected to be good, varieties split about 5 percent grapefruit, 6 percent Satsumas, 15 percent mandarins and tangelos, and 75 percent Navels and Seedlings. Shipments start limitedly and should rise with favorable weather until January, then slow for distant markets. Growers vow to restore Louisiana to prominence in citrus output despite the setback.
