First cantaloupes from Imperial Valley California begin to roll east with indications of a larger crop this season. Acreage totals 15 698 acres compared with 10 896 last season. The first two cars were shipped Monday and by week’s end ten to twelve cars were departing daily from California.
Imperial Valley reports a record start as cantaloupe shipments exceed expectations with two cars sent the first day and more cars planned. The article notes car shortages, new branding from growers, and the planned Chicago Mercantile Exchange to replace the Butter and Egg Board as it expands.
Estimates from Georgia growers and shippers indicate a peach crop around 7000 cars, down 1000 to 1100 from last year. North and East of Atlanta will produce far less, frost damage is blamed, with Elbertas, Georgia Belles, Hileys and Carmens the main varieties and early shipments already under way.

The American Fruit Growers Inc led by Crutchfield and Woolfolk has acquired several large orchards in Martinsburg area within two weeks. Purchases include the 287 acre Pitzer place for 425000 with 200 bearing trees, and the Mt Vernon Orchard Company’s 280 acres sold for 80000, plus the Glen Orchard Company plant for 60000. Other deals involve Flora Dale owners and Tyson Brothers linked to the American Fruit Growers.</S>
New York May 30 The Packer reports inquiries from shippers who represent city commission houses and buy or solicit business on a commission basis. They seek to know if they are liable for the usual federal broker tax of 50 2 per year under section 1801 paragraph 1 of the Revenue Act of 1908.
A clipped letter discusses acting as an agent for New York commission houses and the payment of a tax or duty. The writer asks if they are obliged to pay this tax or if it is paid by their client in New York. The response is attributed to John B. deputy Commissioner of In venue, Washington, D. C. dated the 18th.
About 15 cars of Georgia peaches arrived this week in Chicago along with a few cars of Florida Jewels, first shipments from Florida. Early peaches ran small but were good quality. Georgia Mayflowers in six-basket carriers brought 3.75 to 4.26 per crate, Florida Jewels around 3 to 3.50. Demand was steady enough to move the limited receipts.
Cantaloupe acreage in Arkansas reaches a record this year with about 10 000 acres planted. Old districts nearly double their acreage and new areas, previously not growing cantaloupes, show growth from 64 to 200 acres. Uncertain total carload numbers due to crop still developing.
New York reports the week ending May 24 shows butter exports at 394 497 pounds with a year to date of 15 325 720 pounds mostly to Scandinavia. Cheese exports reach 387 746 pounds with a year to date of 187 pounds to Scandinavia. Eggs total 685 460 dozens all to the United Kingdom, year to date 2 935 670 dozens. Thirty four manifests are missing from steamship reporting, obscuring full totals.
New York receipts show the first Georgia Mayflower peaches arriving in small sizes. Ten cars came in on the opening day with five, then eight, then ten cars sold amid active demand. Prices ranged from 2.50 to 5.40 per carrier across the week.
Washington May 3. Late onion planting in the 14 leading shipping states totals 34 559 acres, down from 25 850 acres last year. The drop is chiefly in the East and Middle West, while the North and Northwest show some increases.
Reports from Oklahoma indicate one of the best peach crops in years as good conditions prevail across regions and spring frosts caused little damage, pointing to a strong statewide season.
Movement from Southern California for the week ending May 27 shows orange shipments totaling 21 percent of the season and lemon shipments reaching 26 percent. No further shipments from California for the period were reported.
