Mississippi tomato shipments from Copiah and Hinds counties will start soon with 2 000 to 2 500 car lots seen. Officials estimate acreage at 15 to 20 percent less than last year, but a heavier yield may lift total shipments near 2 600 cars.
The report says needed rain has not come to Thursday night and estimates on tomato and bean shipments are uncertain. It notes beans need rain more than tomatoes and that the 600 to 700 care for tomatoes may be required. Some leaders see shipments short about 85 percent of last year while expectations hold that the late deal may open around June 1 if weather improves.
Washington May 28 The Bureau of Agricultural Economics reports a denial of the application for a Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act license by Alfred Damus and J F Keefe trading as the Damus Distributing Company Sanford Fla and Pittsburgh Pa The decision centers on concealment of repeated prior violations in the license application The case involved a commission merchant in fruits and vegetables operating interstate and abroad with a prior informal complaint by American Fruit Growers Inc The outline notes dates in 1936 and refers to continuation on page 2

Kent Washington May 28 staff correspondence reports the western Washington vegetable deal beginning with lettuce cars for the season. Cauliflower will ship in mixed cars and lettuce next week, with full straight car loading not until June 10. Peas, the main crop, should move in car lots around June 15 to 20. Weather has been ideal and crops show top quality, with strong expectancies for cauliflower peas and other vegetables like celery carrots broccoli cabbage beets spinach and rhubarb.
A Cincinnati reader informs The Packer that a May 18 1937 report misstates Morris Mandell's case. He pleads nolo contendere to avoid a conviction after destroyed records left no defense, the judge imposes the minimum fine, and no conviction or guilty plea exists.
Los Angeles May 28 field staff of the California-Arizona Orange Grapefruit Agency cut the six month outlook for Southern California Valencia oranges by 3 000 cars. They now expect about 18 000 cars available after June 1 with 6 000 moved by that date making the 1937 crop about 24 000 cars versus 31 000 in 1936. The distribution committee set the prorate for the week starting May 30 at 900 interstate cars and 115 intrastate cars.
The Salt River valley cantaloupe harvest will be late and spread out longer than usual. J M Foote says 8 600 acres in cantaloupes across the valley and Yuma, with early plantings shipping after June 26 and volume loads by July 1. The Yuma district starts shipments May 31 but light at first. Half the fields use new mildewcide resistant seed as cool spring and recent cold weather delay picking.
Georgia peach dealers report the first shipments of the season from Millard Vinson’s orchard near Fort Valley. Mayflower peaches go to New Orleans and Cincinnati with better color than expected. The Orchard Belt forecasts a short crop of about 3 549 cars and a later ripening period than last year.

Chicago May 28 organizations announce the National Potato Publicity Board to be a permanent body with 16 members from across the United States. H B Tabb, executive secretary of the National Potato Association, outlines a national advertising plan to educate the industry and consumers about the potato’s value and purchasing power. Membership includes P C Miller James A Martin Roy Porter and others. Miller Martin and Baker named executive committee with Tabb as secretary.
The Western Growers Protective Association announces the Sweet Eatin campaign for Imperial Valley and Arizona melons will break in 14 principal markets on Thursday June 10. It will use newspaper ads radio broadcasts and the Sweet Eatin trademark to boost demand and sales of cantaloupes honey dews and honey balls.
East Texas around Jacksonville and Tyler faces reduced tomato yields as dry weather cuts the crop to about 65 to 70 percent of normal. A light movement began this week with peak shipments not expected before June 7, while the lower Rio Grande valley deal winds down.
Memphis report projects west Tennessee green wrap tomato crop shipments totaling about 2000 cars if weather remains normal.
