East Texas producers and shippers prepare for a large tomato harvest with packers urging growers to delay picking. Weather issues, Rio Grande Valley and Florida shipments, and rising acreage set expectations for a strong season with increased rail facilities and competition among shippers.
Fresno reports the California Grape Control Board and California Raisin Pool struggle to enroll growers for control of fresh and dried grapes. A 50 member committee schedules a Saturday trouble shooting meeting to boost signups amid apathy and regional opposition. By month’s end under 100,000 of 550,000 acres targeted have signed, with center and juice grape regions more active than central valley raisin growers.
New Jersey enacts a license law for commission merchants and buyers of produce to take effect June 1. Requirements include a fidelity bond of 3000 dollars and licensing for those within the state who buy or solicit produce originating there. New York firms with New Jersey branches or agents must obtain a New Jersey license. out-of-state firms receiving produce sold in New Jersey yards are exempt.
The Tennessee tomato crop shows strong prospects with healthy plants and good rainfall after a dry spell. Acreage is up about 10 to 15 percent overall, western Tennessee remains the main producing area, and harvest may yield around 2,500 to 2,600 cargo cars, depending on prices and market demand.

California's annual harvest runs April to December with about 4 500 carloads of tomatoes and carrots shipped yearly. Memphis reports Tennessee cabbage acreage sharply down across western districts with most points showing 10 to 25 percent less plantings. The first car of Georgia peaches left the state Thursday night for New York where it will be sold on Monday's market. The Mountain Rose shipment, grown by McDaniel and Hightower of Thomaston, was sent to A. Gerrard and Co. in Macon, Georgia.

From Brawley California the first large cantaloupe peak is anticipated between Thursday and next Tuesday. Shipments during the peak could exceed 500 cars daily for a day or more, with 2 296 cars sent Thursday this week, compared with 185 cars at the same time last year. Shippers are optimistic despite some losses from disease as the early brushed crops move toward peak production.
Shippers expect a midweek drop in shipments due to a light crown set and weather damaged fields. By June 10 the late acreage should begin producing again, with FOB prices from 1.75 to 2.00 and a firm market despite bears trying to push down 10 cents. Wilt disease has ruined many fields, halving maturation in some areas, and express shipments set a May 16 record at 301 cars with 375 cars moving to 163 markets nationwide.
The Department of Agriculture issued a report forecasting 8,144,000 crates from the Imperial Valley California, up from 6,713,000 last year. California cantaloupe acreage outside the Imperial Valley totals 11,660 acres versus 10,980 last year, including Honey Dews and Honey Balls.
Coleman Florida May 23 shipments of tomatoes will total 76 to 100 cars as the fruit ripens here. Watermelon movement is expected to begin around June 1 with 60 to 60 cars anticipated from the same area.
Apple growers and shippers meet with the Federal Farm Board to discuss organizing the apple industry on a cooperative plan. Board reports are withheld citing publicity rules, fueling industry questions about a possible central marketing agency and the session's outcomes. The Apple Committee members span multiple states and associations, with executive sessions continuing last week.
May 23 Little Rock Ark production of Arkansas tomatoes for commercial shipment shows a substantial rise over 1929 with the state yield about one third higher. Heavy rains last year reduced output. early dry spells slowed growth this year but recent rains boosted prospects. Fire markets expect shipments to begin June 6 to 10 from southern Arkansas. Varieties include Marglebe and Gulf States. output ships in 80 pound lugs and six basket crates.
Vernon reports show frost damage across several districts in May with apples damaged in Kanloops and other areas. Kelowna peaches and apricots were killed, while Summerland regions fared better. destruction varied by district with cherries apricots and pears most affected and June drop still to be assessed.
The Department of Agriculture estimates 11,668,000 bushels in ten southern states for 1930, down from last year’s 11,716,000 and well below the five year average. Georgia shipments face cuts but show some varieties rebounding, with Elberta, Hileys, and Georgia Belles producing notable car counts despite winter freezes. Some trees weakened by late freezes may affect overall yields.
Carlyle Thorpe, president of Sun Maid’s Delaware corporation, says Sun Maid of Delaware will save about 135000 dollars annually by changing raisin handling for grades. The plan reduces extra handling, improves quality of fancy and choice grades, and has the Sun Maid board approval. The change does not affect growers’ receiving standards.
New York May 23 Louis Streit a small fruit and vegetable jobber at 148 Attorney Street filed a bankruptcy petition last week He lists assets of 963 and liabilities of 3090 Streit had little credit in the trade and cites limited business activity over recent years
Walter Van Bokkelen president of L Van Bokkelen Inc exporters and steamship agents filed a bankruptcy petition in Brooklyn with liabilities of 491658 and assets of 2000. The firm once led South American fruit exports from Buenos Aires and New York.
Fort Pierce Florida May 23 A trial order for 3000 Porto Rican pineapple slips has been sent by County Agent Alfred Warren for five growers. Slips travel from San Juan to Baltimore then Fort Pierce by boat, about 20 days at sea and a month to reach. If they arrive satisfactory a larger order will follow, signaling a revival of St Lucie counties once vast pineapple industry and interest from old and new growers.
E. W. Wiggins veteran fruit and vegetable shipper of Plant City Florida and his wife left for Battle Creek Michigan to seek improved health. He has been in ill health for some time and friends nationwide hope the trip proves beneficial.
Dayton Ohio May 23 The National Association of Grocery Manufacturers of America will hold their convention in Dayton from June 28 to July 1. The event includes food brokers wholesale grocers and retail grocery chains.
