Industry analysts forecast a record tomato crop in Mississippi with strong plants and expanding production. Crystal Springs estimates 1 200 to 1 500 carloads and Hazlehurst 600 to 800 as growers anticipate wider distribution and growing demand across the United States and Canada.
Kansas City May 23 Next week's issue of The Packer Weekly Bulletin will go free to every advertiser and will contain names and addresses of tomato growers and shippers across commercial growing districts. The Bulletin is published weekly for advertisers in this paper.
A. F. Heald & Co. a longtime Boston broker filed four bankruptcy petitions listing liabilities of 313,412 and assets of 342,990. Debts include Florida farming and shipping interests with 30 creditors led by Carey & Walter of Plant City. Secured notes total 16,789 with 12,906 owed. unsecured creditors include Western Union and several Florida firms.
Washington May 2. The United States Bureau of Agricultural Economics releases revised cantaloupe estimates for early states. California Imperial Valley 30 200 acres this year 5 420 000 crates. Prior 760 acres 64 000 crates. Georgia 2 980 acres 45 000 crates. Texas Lower Valley 1 050 acres 156 000 crates. Total 34 990 acres 6 213 000 crates this year versus 5 226 000 last year.
Washington May 23 Senate and House conferees agreed to remove the brokers tax from the new bill. The proposed change, if approved by President Coolidge, would exempt produce and merchandise brokers from the brokers tax.

Pittsburg May 23 The Pittsburgh Independent Fruit Auction opened its inaugural sale after stockholders passed resolutions Monday night. Chester Frangell greeted the crowd promising progress despite rainy obstacles from the Pennsylvania Railroad. The IPC ruled the railroad cannot monopolize unloading platforms or auction room space, allowing fair access for multiple auction companies.
Kansas City announces the Canteloupe Edition of The Packer will publish next week. The paper will cover crop conditions in commercial cantaloupe areas and appeal to cantaloupe growers. Advertisers have begun reserving space for announcements in the issue.
Oswego county grand jury in session at Pulaski returned five indictments against A C Martin a New York produce dealer with Jersey City address. Martin appeared before Judge Francis D Culkin after being indicted in Oswego County for related charges.
The Fruit Produce Rating Agency announced to creditors that an unfavorable court decision prevents publishing its 1924 Gide Book and forces discontinuation. It advised creditors to take action to protect their interests as the firm cannot meet obligations. In Louisville, May 28, a separate note says the Jones Howe Co creditors received a 64% dividend, while debts totaled 10,250 listed before a creditors committee took charge.

Chicago May 23 Prices for watermelons showed a delayed start with imports expected late next week. Express shipments increased while cratemelons sold at 11.50 per melon, about 1 under last week. Mexican cantaloupes were abundant but of uneven quality with prices generally lower. First Imperial Maney cantaloupe express car due today or tomorrow but not yet received.
The United States Bureau of Agricultural Economics reports revised tomato acreage and production for Florida and Lower Valley Texas. Florida East Coast and South total 158,680 acres with 2,072,000 bushels produced. Lower Valley Texas shows 2,280 acres producing 162,000 bushels. arid region 1,090 acres with 5,676,000 bushels. total acreage 2,650 acres and production 5,911,000 bushels.
Los Angeles reports no harvest estimate for the California tomato crop as seed beds delay full production in Central and Southern California including Imperial Valley. Early tomatoes are being shipped from Imperial Valley in core land lots with 1500 to 2000 acres planted and output up to 500 cars, shipments continuing to mid June.
Washington May 24 The Interstate Commerce Commission announced a ten percent express rate reduction on carlot shipments of fruits berries vegetables winter eggs when shipped in cars The move amends a prior November 1923 order which had set a higher rate and applies only to carload consignments.
The Packer notes a strong start to the Imperial Valley cantaloupe season with express shipments from Brawley and subsequent carloads moving to New York, Detroit, and other cities. A new variety called H. B. is claimed to be two weeks earlier than Pollock 10-25, boosting yields. multiple growers and packing firms are listed. Present indications point to a record crop barring unforeseen events.
East Texas expects about 200 cars for tomato shipments with Cherokee county, Alto and Jacksonville districts showing promising yields. Last year 834 cars moved from the district. growers anticipate 125 cars this year in Alto with 4,509 to 5,000 acres in production. Winds and hail in Jacksonville and Tyler areas may reduce tonnage. Plants faced late field starts from cool nights but fruiting should improve with warm weather.
The report notes strong tomato prospects for Sulphur Springs Minvola Winnsboro and Athens with ample crops. Jacksonville facilities have expanded and Shoemaker Dublin increased capacity while the Warm Labor Union added equipment. Marketing agents lag, but arrivals are expected mid next week as Alex Woldert Company Tyler readies ships. continuous shipping expected daily as minetoes develop.
William Cary Bidgood, a Norfolk, Virginia native, was arrested in Baltimore on a Friday afternoon for cashing a $40 worthless check on J. W. McCubbin. Held for hearing, Bidgood allegedly passed bad paper in multiple cities, claiming varied past affiliations. Authorities warn of a campaign starting mid March with similar unpaid notes and multiple merchants holding his counterfeit drafts.
