Memphis May 2 The Tennessee tomato industry shows acreage near normal with about 2000 carlots expected. Growth over recent years includes expansion north of the mountains and shifted shipments to Canada and the south, centered in Gibson County with 1700 to 8000 acres in Hermal plantings.
Marlagen Texas May 22 report shows the Lower Rio Grande Valley tomato deal moving into full headway after prior interference. Shipments expected in good volume by cars from Falrturias Yoakum east Texas to Jacksonville sector with some cars loaded south end by May 25. Growers association price talks and minimums cause tension among shippers while demand normally rises this season.

Chicago May 22 The American Fruit & Vegetable Shippers Association led by manager E 8 Briggs says the motor truck problem cannot be solved without regulating itinerant peddlers or private motor vehicles. He argues safety standards and enforceable rules are essential to keep regulated carriers from being pushed into unregulated operations amid four million registered motor trucks in the United States.
Texas Fruit Distributors based in McAllen Texas shipped about 60 carloads of tomatoes to New York aboard a specially chartered fast fruit boat Ormes. The cargo will be distributed to eastern markets and arrived in good condition for the seventh morning sale. Rail shipments of 20 to 25 carloads daily continue alongside plans to use chartered boats for eastern seaboard and European markets.
Tallahassee May 22 Florida will ask the U S Supreme Court to review a Florida Supreme Court ruling that struck down the graduated gross receipts tax on chain stores while upholding the occupational license tax and the base receipts tax as applied to all stores. The decision found the graduated tax unconstitutional.
Jay Rowe of Canaseraga New York, senior partner in the Rowe & Kennedy produce grain and hay wholesale business, died in a Hornell hospital after an operation. His son J Gordon Rowe, connected with the firm for 20 years, will carry on the business.
R E Marriott spoke before the Retail Grocers of New Jersey convention in Atlantic City on May 22. As dealer service representative for American Fruit Growers Inc he urged grocers to feature fresh fruits and vegetables to boost sales of dry goods and non perishables and to enhance displays and advertising.
Edward L. Frost of Richmond Virginia president of the National League of Wholesale Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Distributors reports improved business in markets such as Cincinnati Indianapolis Dayton and Columbus compared with last year. He and Horace H. Herr National League secretary spoke at Cincinnati Elks Club dinner May 12 and to the Indianapolis branch the following night noting a more hopeful industry mood.
Next week will feature multiple hearings in Los Angeles and Santa Ana over state and federal citrus marketing agreements. Independent shippers seek injunctions against the federal orange grapefruit order and the state citrus license, with consolidated hearings on related cases and a rehearing in the Withers Brothers matter. A final constitutional ruling on AAA and little AAA agreements could come closer.
M. Blanchette, a fruit and vegetable shipper based in Corpus Christi, Texas, was adjudged bankrupt last week. The first creditors meeting is set for May 23 at the office of Howell Ward, referee, in Corpus Christi.
Horace H. Herr secretary of the National League of Wholesale Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Distributors will visit major Pacific markets this summer. He aims to discuss industry problems with state officials and leaders, seeking closer East West cooperation to promote trade welfare.
Cantaloupe shipments from the Imperial Valley remain light with cooler weather delaying harvest. Prices show slight declines from last week as shippers report slow movement through Sunday and into fresh shipments to date.
In Yuma Arizona on May 22 the first cantaloupes of the season left Allen & Snell with a second shipment on Tuesday. The crop, from a covered acreage, is ahead of the open acreage by a week to ten days and five to six cars are expected this week. Shipments from the Salt River valley should begin around June 20 to 25 with moderate volume the first week of July.
The commodity purchasing section under AAA, led by Robert C. Butner, bought 80 cabbage cars on Tuesday and plans to total about 300 cars by tonight. Purchases paid 13 dollars per bulk ton gross, loaded bulk for CCC camps and military encampments, and will largely bypass larger markets due to rain damage. It is expected about 200 cars remain unbought by May 23.
The warehouse and produce workers union called a strike against the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company in Cleveland. About 27 strikers picketed warehouses all week, while a special unit arranged by Louis Denova serviced A and P stores with fruits and vegetables. President Hartford of A and P pursued settlement attempts this week.
In California the 1936 season is shaping up with frosts, irregular production and mixed prospects across orchards and vineyards. Despite late frosts and uneven sets from blossom rain, overall growth is ahead of 1935, with cherry crops forecast by the Cooperative Crop Reporting. Continued details appear on Page 23.
Macon Georgia May 22 Carlots shipments of early peaches from middle Georgia orchards show modest progress this week totaling 15 cars by Wednesday. Varieties Mountain Rose and Mayflower lead the early lots, sizes good despite a six week dry spell and limited rainfall. Weather showers are forecast later this week and fruit quality remains high with peaches growing to good size.
A Philadelphia trade group calls a general meeting for May 26 to discuss a proposed central market on a 67 acre Delaware Avenue tract near the Pennsylvania and B&O terminals. A major industrial owner would build a modern market with stores and an office building without requiring trade members to invest, only lease space. If the trade rejects it, the tract may be used for other purposes.
Better Market on Cabbage in New York with prices advancing as stocks cleared. Six peck baskets saw South Carolina white at 1.50 to 1.50, Louisiana crates at 2, Mississippi crates 1.50 to 2.25, Texas 1.50 to 2, Norfolk Norfolk baskets 0.65 to 1.00 per basket, crates 0.75 to 1.00, Florida up from 2.25 to 2.50 per basket.
The spring golf tournament of the trade and the style revue will be held at Elmwood Country Club East Patterson New Jersey on Saturday. Rivalry for prizes is expected to be keen with a large turnout and a banquet to conclude the day. Committee members include Al Marenti Reggie Hart Phi Reed and Bob O Grady.
Fond du Lac Wis May 22 Everything is ready for the annual convention of the Wisconsin Upper Michigan Fruit Jobbers Association to be held at the Retlaw hotel tomorrow May 23. Fred J Leonard secretary says Harry Manis will headline the dinner and a golf tournament is planned. New officers will be elected and reports from the treasurer and secretary are expected short. A committee report on Public Service Commission hearings over truck driver hours will also be presented.
Detroit fruit and vegetable industry members map plans for the Western Fruit Jobbers Association convention to be held January 18 to 21, 1937. President G A Marsh secretary William L Wagner and past president S M Cohodas will visit Detroit May 27 for hotel, headquarters arrangements and conference with local representatives.

Crystal Springs Mississippi May 22 Another tomato season looms as growers prepare for a long history of the crop that sustains the area. The Mississippi tomato trade now spans 20 plus shipping points and supports thousands of jobs and significant spending. Prospects point to a possibly strong yield though April cold may have damaged some plants.
Reports indicate California tomato acreage roughly matches last season with Merced and San Diego counties leading early harvests. Most Merced tomatoes go to canners while San Diego plans July harvests. Los Angeles will rely on Imperial and Coachella valleys for fresh supplies into May and June.
Leesburg Florida May 22 first watermelons of the season have left the area this week. Heavy movement not expected until June. Melon sizes are small and tonnage greatly reduced by lack of moisture as the growing sections still wait for rain.
