Tomato acreage up in Mississippi and Tennessee this season

Mississippi and Tennessee show higher commercial tomato acreage and output. Mississippi shipped 1700 to 1800 cars last year and now expectations point to 2500 to 3000 cars this season with Crystal Springs leading and Hazlehurst second in state acreage.

Weather-friendly period boosts Mississippi tomato progress with forecasts of higher yields in Tennessee. Reports from Crystal Springs and other points note increased acreage by 15 percent, while shipments from Mississippi start in small lots and larger movement to begin around June.

Tomato crop outlook boosts Mississippi district output

A general acreage increase signals a much larger tomato crop this year in the Mississippi districts. Last year shipped 1,700 to 1,800 cars. with expanded plantings and higher production, output may rise 25 to 30 percent to about 2,500 to 3,900 cars. Growers expect favorable weather, central packing houses, and strong demand as Duffey, Bonds & Co. and others prepare for the June shipping season from Livingston, Hazlehurst, and nearby points.

Frank E. Wagner Dies After Tragic Traffic Death

Packer to release cantaloupe crop review next week

The Packer will publish an annual cantaloupe crop review with acreage, prospective yield, varieties, shipment times, and profiles of principal distributors and receivers. It will cover Imperial Valley California to Rocky Ford Colorado and serve shippers, receivers, and growers planning the season.

Notable scribe Wagner dies after accident

Wharton Potato Crop Not Damaged by Flood

Wharton Texas reports say flood rumors overstated says A A Mullins sales agent for the Wharton County Farm Bureau Potato Growers Cooperative Association. He notes about 5 000 acres will be harvested this week with 16 cars moved last week and no water soaked potatoes in the crop.

Pennsylvania System Tries 10 Shift New York Potato Market

The Pennsylvania Railroad planned a westward shift with new yards outside Jersey City and a 600 car capacity, aiming to move produce trade away from North River piers. An embargo on South destined potatoes was to begin early next week, drawing protests from shippers and trade groups.

Gerow Back from California for Awhile

New York May 19 W B Gerow of Smith and Holden in charge of Western offices based in Los Angeles arrived in New York last Saturday. He will stay until about July 1 before returning to California with his family for the season. He met with the transportation committee of the Fruit and Produce Trade Association and praised the Great Northern Railroad noting excellent dining car service from Wenatchee to Chicago and courteous staff while urging delegates at the International Apple Shippers' convention to consider Northwest travel.

Sectional 35 000 Acres Cantaloupes In Imperial Valley

Brawley California May 19 At a meeting of cantaloupe shippers and railroad men the horticultural commissioner estimated the Imperial Valley cantaloupe acreage closer to 135 000 than 1 000 acres. Much of the crop is two weeks late and one or two express cars are due May 27 to 30. Last year 30 shippers. this year 46. Yield expected below average due to weather and long cultivated land being worked out. Packer's annual cantaloupe edition due next week.

Early Irish potato crop forecast for 1921 harvest

The Department of Agriculture forecasts the 1921 early Irish potato crop across Atlantic states from Virginia to Texas at about 39 168 cars of 200 barrels each, up 13 percent from 34 599 cars in 1921. Virginia leads with about 19 640 cars, Florida 4 935, North Carolina 8 620, Alabama 2 223, Louisiana 1 856, Texas 1 573, Georgia 472, Mississippi 224 cars.

Sam Drucker Faces Criminal Prosecution in NY

Creditors of Sam Drucker, who failed last week as reported in The Packer, move to press criminal charges. At a creditors meeting this week Drucker offered to pay 100 cents on the dollar in six months, including money owed from recent purchases. The proposal was rejected, and Drucker’s losses run about 15000 dollars for goods bought after paying for prior week’s supplies.

Few Tomatoes in the Imperial Valley Report

In Brawley California on May 19 the tomato deal in the Imperial Valley was frozen by January’s freeze. About 250 acres were replanted but came on late and little movement is anticipated for another week or two. Acreage is scattered in small patches, limiting tomato shipments from the area.

Providence Firm in Trouble

The New York market received a letter from the attorney of S Tourtellet & Co fruit and produce dealers of Providence calling a meeting of creditors for May 25 at 2 p.m. The firm has been in weak shape for some time and it is unclear what it owes in New York, though the debt is not thought to be large.
