Disjointed notes indicate cantaloupe movements in California and empire markets. Frost damage affects crops in Michigan and Virginia. Florida watermelon, South Carolina peach, and Oregon Washington pear prospects also noted amid anticipated price shifts and transport changes.
In California and Arizona growers in Imperial and Yuma valleys voted on a federal marketing agreement for melons. Shippers backed the plan through Western Growers with a California Little AAA order to regulate interstate and intrastate shipments of cantaloupes honeydews and honeyballs. Secretary Wallace was expected to announce a likely approval by week’s end.
Washington May 13 A restraining order halting Leon Brothers Inc from continuing business for 90 days from May 9 was issued in U S District Court announced by the Department of Agriculture Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Senior marketing specialist H A Spilman cited Circular No 169 of April 15 1988 summarizing decisions under the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act with reference to the case.

St Louis May 12 1938 I met shippers and growers of apples and other fruits in Idaho and Washington at Boise and Yakima and invited them to the International Apple Association convention August 9 to 12 in St Louis. The Idaho Shippers Traffic Association now Growers and Shippers Association of Idaho will also attend to discuss problems and improve handling and selling methods.
Leesburg Florida May 13 The watermelon movement in Florida began this week with several cars moving but gains are slow. Crop condition favorable with scattered rain and cool nights delaying morning warmth. Weather expected to warm soon and boost growth. Quality described as superior for the season and possibly the best in years. Northern markets cold weather has slowed demand.
District Deputy J C Memory of the state unemployment compensation commission said over 400 cases involve persons described as potential strawberry pickers who refused work. He said hearings would continue for about three weeks in Dont Want Jobs Wilson North Carolina.
Washington, May 18. The Senate Interstate Commerce Committee heard that the Pettengill Bill to repeal the Long and Short Haul Clause of the Interstate Commerce Act would amount to a railroad loss leader policy. J R Van Arnum of the National League Distributors criticized advocates for inconsistency and urged caution before congressional approval.
The Department of Agriculture reports fruit prospects near average after April freezes damaged peaches and cherries in the central and north Atlantic states. Southern peaches fare worse in Oklahoma and Texas. Growth is favorable in Pacific Northwest and California with heavy bloom and good set expected. Florida citrus droppage is heavier due to lack of rain. Strawberry acreage up about 13 percent over 1937. Vegetables moving to market earlier. supplies plentiful and production expected to stay heavy for weeks.
Chicago May 18 The Transcontinental Freight Bureau on May 7 placed on its docket 20336 and 20387 to raise rates on deciduous fruits and vegetables from the north and south Pacific coast territories covered by tariffs 48E and 44D. Carriers say the increase aligns with a general rate-decrease program and improves relations with shipments, though the proposed rates are below levels deemed unreasonable by the Interstate Commerce Commission in Docket 19130.
Edison California May 13. Kern county potato shipments from the Edison district run over 100 cars daily. Shafter district began with two cars Monday and 13 on Tuesday, 20 expected Wednesday. Edison averages 100 to 120 cars daily with Bliss Triumph and Long Whites exported to New York Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Quality has improved and sizes are larger. Shafter stock mostly size A. demand remained active early in the week with a drop on Wednesday. Prices quoted at 1.10 for U S 1 regulars and 1.15 for U S 1 size A. Shipments to cash track buyers clean up daily. End of next week expected to see higher volume. deal in the Shafter area underway by May 26.
In Haglehurst Mississippi on May 13 officials estimated 600 carloads of cabbage remained to move from the state after Thursday with about 300 cars left to depart after Saturday May 14. The stock is said to be in good size and fairly green to green, with remaining tonnage scheduled for the coming week.
A marketing agreement for Irish potatoes grown in the five gulf states became effective May 12. The order covers all potato handlers in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, and Louisiana and runs until July 31, 1938 to support orderly marketing of the early crop. Final grower approval was shown in a gulf states referendum.
South Alabama potato shipments advance from Baldwin county toward a June 1 finish. By May 14 two thirds of the crop is expected moved, with about 2 900 cars already dispatched and 850 more likely this week. Southern Alabama totals include Mobile and Escambia counties with around 750 cars remaining.
Imperial valley cantaloupe producers face a near normal output with two key phases. The old phase recalls 45 Resistant cantaloupes repeating two-year market satisfaction. The new phase introduces a marketing agreement under the AAA to curb peak movements and limit loading of undesirable sizes.
Cabbage movement from west Tennessee to market begins slowly with a larger volume expected from May 16 onward. Weeks ending May 21 and May 28 are forecast heavy, aiming for completion by June 7. Total Tennessee shipments expected at 560 to 600 cars, with about 25 percent by truck.
Salt River valley cantaloupe acreage is smaller this year, 6320 acres planted, with 970 more in honeydew. Yuma plantings raise the state totals to 8962 cantaloupes and 1010 honey dew melons. Cool weather affected both Yuma and Salt River valleys, delaying maturity.
New York officials plan a city run wholesale produce market in the Washington street area. Commissioner William Fellowes Morgan Jr says a federal grant is sought to finance a $30 million project modernizing the current market and building new structures on enlarged North River piers. The market would serve national producers and city residents, with annual sales totaling about $370 million and aim to reduce handling costs.
Brawley Calif May 13 Imperial Valley has shipped an average 1,350 cars during the first month of the season but total shipments through Wednesday night reached only 92 cars due to March and April conditions. Industry expects daily loadings to double this week with quality improving as 45s resistants begin to move volumes. F.O.B. market steady with mixed sizes and pricing across jumbo standard and pony 45s plus precooling charges.
