Shippers Win Out as Poultry Classification Change Delayed

Word from Washington says the Interstate Commerce Commission suspended until August 29 a proposed change in live poultry classifications. Frank G Heilman and the National Live Poultry Shippers Association protested, saying rates from Iowa and Minnesota to Chicago would soar. A Chicago convention of carrot shippers and railroad representatives may be held to forge a new understanding before the final date.

NY Dealers Fight Freight Bills on Refused Cars

At a joint meeting of the Fruit and Produce Trade and the National League trade bodies in New York on May 1, railroads push to make receivers pay freight on perishable shipments refused by consignees. The Pennsylvania railroad pressed the policy, insisting receivers bear the costs even if stock decays. Trade groups seek a ruling from the Interstate Commerce Commission and plan a final conference as Newark receivers vow to defend their asserted rights.

Strawberry shipments and prices in New York and California reports

New York market reports show Chadbourn and Louisiana berries selling from 25 to 28 cents per quart with some poor stock at 6 cents. North Carolina forecasts heavy arrivals next week. California citrus shipments totaled 1 764 cars in southern California and 5 240 in northern California through April 29. Chadbourn Wilmington shipments include three to seven cars daily with 10 to 20 cars expected today. cement demand to rise early next week.

Many new fruit trees in Ottawa county Ohio orchards

Port Clinton area reports about 1,000 acres of new and replanted orchards this spring. Danbury and Bay townships lead with tens of thousands of trees, including over 20,000 peach trees on Kelly's Island and 40,000-plus in Oak Harbor Catawba Island and La Carne also show strong planting.

In Cincinnati on May 1 the Ohio valley saw active demand for new potatoes with Floridas Rose No 1 at 5 a barrel No 2 at 4 Triumph No 1 6 6 25 a barrel No 2 5 6 50. Michigan Wisconsin Minnesota old stock held firmer as seed hangover remains Red River Early Ohio mostly for seed while some cars move to table use about 60 seed cars and about 80c a bushel for the best table stock.

Chicago butter markets steady with strong demand

Chicago reports a satisfactory butter week with good demand for fresh stock across grades. Receipts fluctuated as Monday 7 286 tubs, Tuesday 6 975, Wednesday 7 831, while quality varied with some lots tasting strong due to poor pasture. Prices held firm with extras at 16 16 1 2 c, creamer y extras 24 24 1 2 c, extras firsts 23 23 c, firsts 21 22 c, seconds 18 19 c.

Quarantine on Maine Potatoes Enforced by Federal Government
