Washington March 20 The 24th annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States will be held in Washington April 27 to 30. The briefing stresses questions on the function of business private initiative vs public authority and the balance between government policy and enterprise.
Raymondville Texas March 20 The 1936 south Texas Bermuda onion deal is under way. Receipts at packing sheds are light and quality is ordinary. Limited car lot shipments begin next week with volume after April. If no more rain, shipments should rise after month start and peak around April 15 to 20. Thrips and blight threaten yield, but best fields look fine. Expected Willacy county crops may not surpass last year. Prices for yellows range 1.25 to 1.75 per 50 pound bag depending on quality.
At the Jersey City meeting Francis R. Hart said United Fruit earned 10.359 million dollars in 1935 or 3.54 dollars a share. Eighty four percent of earnings was paid as dividends. Investments valued at 278.5 million with tropical holdings at 62 percent. The fleet now includes 89 ships worth over 92 million dollars carrying 49 000 passengers, 893 000 tons of cargo and about 52 million stems of bananas.
A car of lettuce sent from Arizona and delivered to Major Bowes in New York was sold by the Miller-Gerow Company. Proceeds will be distributed to local charities. Miller-Gerow bore handling expenses. Major Bowes supported the effort and cooperated with shippers and the company.
The March flood in western Pennsylvania swamped Pittsburgh with a crest of 46 feet. The Allegheny Monongahela confluence sent water into the Ohio river, flooding downtown and the produce district. About 250 cars were trapped, and many houses were flooded as the market operations suspended for several days.
A public hearing in Washington D C on March 20 considers amendments to the orange and grapefruit order for California and Arizona handlers. Proposals include boosting overshipment from 5 to 10 percent and allowing inter district allotment exchanges with Growers Advisory Committee oversight and Agriculture Secretary approval.

Coachella California reports onion fields in Riverside county are in good condition. About one third of 300 acres are planted with Crystal Wax onions and the rest with Yellow Ber mudas. Harvest is expected to begin around the last week of April.
Grand Forks North Dakota reports a peak in potato movement across the Red River valley as about 6 000 cars have moved in four weeks from North Dakota and Minnesota. Warmer weather melts snow. shipments curtail but demand from southern regions remains high. Dealers estimate most stock moved since January 1 with about 60 percent cleared. Continue reads on page 18.
A court hearing on the federal AAA order regulating orange and grapefruit handlers in California and Arizona moved toward a decision after a Friday temporary restraining order against Edwards Fruit Co of Colton. Judge Leon R Yankwich reserved the ruling for several days as prosecutors argued the prior Hoosinc Mills decision has bearing.
Brownsville Texas March 20. The trial shipment of vegetables from Port Isabel to Boston was made by Mc Davitt and Lightner, Brownsville's well known shipping firm. The packer corrected an earlier error naming Davis Wade of San Benito. Billy McDavitt shipped the first solid car of vegetables by rail and now the first shipment by boat. The cargo included carrots cabbage beets spinach and parsley and sold in Boston early last week.

Spartanburg South Carolina reports promising peach prospects for the season. County Agent W H Stallworth notes last year’s shipment reached 400 carloads to northern markets yielding about 300000 dollars to producers and about 500000 peach trees were in the county.
Philadelphia reports no food shortage despite flood disruptions. Market arrivals were minimal or delayed but on hand supplies are deemed sufficient to meet needs if transport remains restricted. Salinas California reports fair growth in the Salinas Watsonville district during the first two weeks of March. Evansville Indiana March 20 R H Pennington of the Pennington Geissler Company and secretary of the Melon Distributors Association who has been seriously ill and confined to Deaconess hospital for six weeks is showing considerable improvement this week He underwent a second operation last Thursday and since Sunday his pain has eased and his physician expresses encouragement for a full recovery.
Brown and Willen, carrot distributors of apples and beaches, win a court decision in Detroit on an appeal by Ben B Schwartz & Sons. The Department of Agriculture awarded Brown & Willen $400 per peck for damaged apples. Judge Tuttle affirmed the agency ruling. N George Bashara represented the Martinsburg firm.
Hammond Louisiana March 20 The Louisiana strawberry season nears opening under favorable conditions with expected liberal supplies for Easter. Berries for consumers should leave the parish around April 4 to 6 and the local deal aims for a steady daily movement. Ted Carfel paid 11 for the first full crate of 24 pints, a combined picking from several growers in West Natalbany. Weather has been ideal with strong plant development and no early bloom loss, suggesting a strong crop.
Washington March 20 The Robinson-Patman Anti Chains Store bill is advancing as the Senate Judiciary Committee reports favorably and a House subcommittee reaches a favorable position. Senators and representatives must reconcile bills for final congressional action. supporters press for passage while chain organizations oppose it citing higher consumer costs. Charles F Adams of Boston contends price inflation would rise about 75 million dollars if enacted and warns middlemen would gain at the expense of customers.
In New York on March 20 a rigorous protest was registered by the Merchant Truckmen's Bureau against the April 1 adoption of new tariff schedules filed by the railroads for the store door delivery system. The Interstate Commerce Commission has been asked to suspend the tariff. Organized truckmen maintain that railroad free delivery from piers and lines will cripple their business.
A report by Consul Harold Véwell from Havana notes indications the Isle of Pines grape fruit crop will be about normal in volume. With favorable weather and recent rains, groves are in good condition and should begin to mature around July 15.
