Texas Onion Deal Opens With Early Laredo Load
Laredo, March 19. The season’s first Texas Bermuda onions began loading from Raymondville with 100 acres under cultivation. Crops moved by rail to the East and by boat to New York from Galveston. Plantings delayed by cold weather mean April to June maturation. Buyers show renewed interest as traders, growers, and brokers from Laredo, Dallas, Chicago, and Detroit converge for the season.
Strawberry Outlook at Castleberry Alabama
Castleberry Alabama March 19 The strawberry outlook here is very encouraging with good quality fruit and a bountiful potential yield. The season is later due to February and early March freezes that damaged early blossoms and slowed growth. Acreage has risen about 25 percent to over 700 acres with a possible total exceeding 500 to 700 acres once older fields are accounted for. The Klondyke remains the main variety with Missionaries for early express movement starting late March. Barricaded crates pack the fruit in 24 full quart ventilated boxes. Last year’s strong prices revived interest, and expansion continues. Castleberry hosts one of the nation’s largest strawberry growing and shipping sites, with about 136 cars shipped last year and roughly 200 expected this season if favorable weather holds. The Castleberry Strawberry Association, active since the industry began here, has 175 members. George W. Martin serves as president, L. A. Kirkland as secretary, and G. G. Kramp as sales manager. The association grades and inspects fruit before loading for distribution nationwide.
