New York March 3. The general committee on organization of the New York Butter and Egg Exchange, the name adopted for the new exchange in this city, held two meetings in the past week. Prospects are bright for the opening on April 1, with permanent quarters yet to be secured. Members meet in a conference room at 22 Broadway with weekly meetings at 3 pm every Tuesday. Committees are appointed on bylaws, subscriptions, rules, and building.
Chicago, March 3. A wire to Barry Redfearn of the Live Poultry and Dairy Shippers' Traffic Association says southwestern railroads will issue tariffs allowing stoppage in transit on car lots of live poultry in Oklahoma. A $5 per car charge will apply, but the through rate from the origin will stand, saving about $200 per car for Oklahoma shippers. The stop privilege exists elsewhere but is new to Oklahoma, seen as a victory for the shippers.
Harlem and Bronx rabbis strike against wholesale live poultry dealers over a 1 cent tax per kosher killed chicken. They argue the levy cuts into a livable wage and warn the tax could total about $60 000 annually if enforced.
The cabbage market in Chicago showed a firm tone this week with prices advancing to 12 dollars per ton on a 7.0 basis. Dealers reported strong outside inquiry and limited refrigerator cars, while operators expected stocks to clear at satisfactory prices as most offerings were storage stock and kept well.
New York on March 3 reports exports of 46,273 barrels for the week ending last Saturday, down from 61,774 the prior year. Season totals reach 1,184,712 barrels, versus 2,199,922 barrels a year ago, with boxes included in the barrel figures.
