Washington June 28 Special rules govern cold storage butter dealers formulated by the Food Administration. Rules cover licensee purchases, dealer classes, price advances over cost, and allowances for storage, with detailed limits for manufacturers, commission merchants, wholesalers, and retailers and provisions for interdealer resales and local administration.
Chicago June 23 There was little or no change in the citrus market this week with a gradual shading of prices noted to meet rising offerings. Trading was moderate, supplies ample across all lines. Oranges and lemons in fair supply and steady. California boxes of oranges quoted 6.50 to 6.75 for fancy grades with choice at 5.50. California lemons sold at 9 for 300 to 360 count fancy, 8 to 8.50 for choice. Grapefruit around 2.50 to 3.26 per box for June bloom offerings.
Chicago June 28 Under the direct influence of light receipts the poultry market showed firmness early this week with fowls and broilers advancing 2c by Tuesday. brisk demand left offerings snapped up at higher quotes. express coops were 50 Monday and 450 Tuesday. turkeys 17 24c, fowls 27c, roosters 20%c, broilers 42c per 2 lb plus, guinea hens $4 dozen, ducks 2c, spring ducks 3c, geese 14 15c and spring geese 23c. market firm Wednesday with full quotations and active demand. receipts 710 express coops. Thursday firmness continued fowls up 1 4c, other kinds unchanged. offerings readily taken from express.
An order from the Federal Food Board imposes a daily market price for live poultry in New York. It also requires prompt unloading within 48 hours of arrival, excluding Sundays and holidays, with a bulletin board to post daily and weekly receipts at the Washington market. The changes affect New York, Jersey City, Newark, and nearby towns.
Grand Rapids reports a 38 degree frost Saturday night, the lowest in 20 years, hitting potatoes corn beans and many crops. Tomatoes cucumbers melons grapes and berries suffer as dry soil and lack of air drainage worsen damage statewide. Washington June 28 The following statement on acreage condition and information concerning crops for the week ending June 28 was released by the Bureau of Estimates. Light frost was reported in some sections with slight damage to beans the only injury noted. In New York cabbage plantings are underway with a possible end of planting by July 1 but a plant shortage may limit final acreage in some counties. Canteloupes in Virginia show 75 percent of normal, while Colorado prospects are bright with adequate water and good rains improving outlook. Arizona yields expected to exceed last year with Mesa reporters estimating 86 percent of normal. California shipments peaked June 18 and will likely continue into July with Heber expected to ship heavily. Central sections show potential for a sizable cantaloupe crop though blooms have dropped from heat. Celery in Livingston and Chemung counties remains in good condition though acreage is reduced due to labor costs and last year’s poor season. Cucumber notes begin with Virginia Norfolk Section data.
New York onion fields report increases in Livingston county to about 160 acres with generally good stands though some wind maggot and smut damage. Indiana forecasts about 75 percent of normal due to wind weed and labor fears. Creditors of A Kriegel appointed Ward W Smith of the Fruit & Produce Trade Association to oversee and form a five member committee to examine Kriegel's affairs after his books were handed to creditors. Kriegel owed about 310,000, with 5,000 due to fruit and vegetable merchants. He bought heavily on the street June 20, two weeks before failing, though lacking a credit line. His attorney cited long hardship and borrowing to keep the business going. Easier watermelon market Chicago June 28. Watermelon receipts up, Tom Watsons 20 to 25 pounds averaged 20.45 per 100, 28 to 30 pounds 60 65, 33 to 35 pounds 75 80.
John D. Key and W. F. Maxwell, arrested on a swindling charge against Ohio eye and poultry shippers, were indicted in Columbus. Held on $1000 bonds, they face trial at the Columbus district court, with Key vowing to sue The Packer and officials if released. Maxwell offered to bet $25 they would be freed, detailing past acts and licenses, as both deny malls involvement and claim no clear settlement with all shippers. The grand jury returned the indictment, to be tried at the present or fall term.
New York June 28 Government officials require all peaches arriving for the day’s market to be unloaded. Receivers fear a lack of time to stabilize supplies leading to glut and ruinous prices for Georgia growers. Carloads from Georgia varied this week with Carmens and Hiley Belles selling mostly between 1.50 and 2.50 per crate. windfalls and overripe fruit dragged prices down on Wednesday and Thursday.
New York June 23 Joseph Sultan an egg dealer paid May and Jacobson attorneys for Frank Bennett an egg shipper of Columbus Ind 509 65 this week after the judgment against him had been affirmed by the Appelate Division of the Supreme Court. The case was reviewed in The Packer several months ago at which time Bennett obtained a judgment in the lower court. At the trial it was proven by testimony that Sultan sold the eggs for more money than he reported to Bennett.
