Outlook for Onion Sets Around Chicago
A H Smith of Leonard Seed Company spent three days inspecting onion sets in the Chicago district. South Side areas Riverside and South Holland suffered weather and maggot damage, likely yielding three to one, while the North Side shows better prospects with favorable harvesting in two weeks. Yellow sets look strongest, expected to be small but high quality. Plowed spring land reduced overall size, but Chicago sets may meet strong demand. Smith also noted Louisville crop dry weather hurting yield slightly though acreage remains the same.
