Ice Manufacturing Costs Vary Widely Across Carriers
Chicago reports from a California hearing on refrigeration rates show direct ice manufacturing costs rising in many locations. Bakersfield 1931 costs exceeded 1930, driven by power plant and labor expenses, fuel energy, water and supplies. Other cities also saw 1931 increases, while a few reported reductions. Ed Briggs notes labor costs loom large. 1932 may see further shifts, affecting rate defenses based on 1930–31 costs.
