Fruit Variety Progress Hinges on New Crosses at Geneva
Geneva July 20 New York Agricultural Experiment Station horticul turists say progress in fruit growing depends on developing new varieties through crossing existing ones and rigorous testing. Old varieties are not perfect and must be improved in quality appearance and adaptability. Thousands of seedlings are discarded while only a few new fruits earn a name and distribution. New apples grapes raspberries and strawberries already show superior traits from parent varieties. Without ongoing variety improvement the fruit industry would stagnate.
