Heat and drought threaten Northwest potato crops with limited current damage but potential serious losses if hot weather continues in coming days. Weather officials warn growers to monitor conditions and implement protective measures as temperatures rise across the region.
From Minneapolis reports scattered showers miss large producing areas while heat waves linger. Temperatures ranging 96 to 110 degrees threaten yields though some districts report minor damage and hopeful signs for late rains. Continued heat may worsen the outlook with fears of inferior stock if no rain comes soon.
Kalamazoo county expects the early celery movement to begin this week with shippers calling conditions “100 percent” and almost too good to be true. Principal shipping points are Kalamazoo Comstock and Portage. Crop quality is anticipated to be exceptional barring unforeseen weather changes and the dry spell aided the early crop’s setting.

Pueblo Colo July 10 Thousands of dollars worth of crops were hailed out in the St Charles Mesa farming district southeast of Pueblo by a 25 minute hail and rain storm. Hail and wind beat the area from Blonde and Vineland districts southward nearly 15 miles into the Wilson area. Reports say virtually all crops were laid waste with seven inch hail drifts on the Santa Fe Trail and a heavy rain following the hail worsened the damage.
Rochester July 10 The New England apple and pear industry golf team plans a classic at a Boston area course on August 11 as part of the International Apple Association convention. Golf committee chair G T Sawwyer invites players to confirm attendance and town entries to compete for prizes at the banquet August 13.
Denver merchants won a victory as the Union Pacific and other railroads failed to appeal a Denver court ruling. The decision held that freight delayed by railroad agreements could yield damages to the Amato Fruit and Produce Company. The ruling clarifies state court authority versus the Interstate Commerce Commission and marks the first such freight agreement case in the United States.
In Chicago on July 10 the American Fruit and Vegetable Shippers Association urged railroads nationwide to feature fresh produce on dining car menus. Manager Eg Briggs said eastern southern western northern and trans continental lines responded with favorable pledges of support.
The Arkansas Elberta peach season opens with light crop but good size and color. shipments from Nashville Highland and DeQueen Horatio areas expected late this week with prices around 1.45 per bushel f o b for No 1. Demand outlook favors higher prices due to reduced supply and rains boosted crop quality. Estimated district output 80 to 85 percent of normal, about 1000 cars vs 2500 to 3000 normally.
Ottawa July 10 The Canadian Fruit and Vegetable Jobbers Association led by secretary L F Burrows on June 30 issued a statement about lack of cooperation by the United States in the wake of the Canada US trade agreement and annual convention. It notes expectations that technical difficulties hindering trade would be resolved after a conference between trade representatives. Continued on Page 14.
Muscatine Iowa July 10 despite extreme heat cabbage crop in this district shows no major damage and should mature with rain in coming days. Growth slow but quality stock remains since late variety planted. Subsoil moisture from spring high water keeps plants maturing, though growers fear lack of moisture. If rainfall arrives, loading could rise to 15 to 20 cars daily. Geo A Hahn Company and Hahn's Bros. Company lead the district's production and shipping and see no serious situation yet.
San Benito Texas July 10 The San Benito Port Isabel navigation district board ordered immediate construction of a precooling and refrigerating plant to handle Rio Grande valley citrus and vegetables by forced ventilated and refrigerated boats to eastern markets. General manager James Q Louthan announced the project to be ready in time for the grapefruit movement.
Washington July 10 Judgment for 17500 was entered against Henry G Beland Fort Kent Maine by the U S District Court at Bangor for operating without a license under the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act The penalty covers 35 carrot shipments of potatoes totaling 17500 Beland had a license in 1931 but did not renew or apply for a new one He is charged with dishonored checks to growers Judgment by default and the penalty is collectible on any of his property.
Freehold N J July 10 Occasional truck loads of New Jersey potatoes will be shipped next week with few cars. But carload movement may begin week of July 20 and heavy movement near July 27. Fields are green and size is improving. Acreage equals last year. Growing conditions through next 10 days will largely determine production. Yield per acre expected near normal, aiming 8 000 to 9 000 cars this year including heavy movement. Market outlook favorable with prices expected satisfactory.
State Agriculture Department officials warn that continuing drought across New York could push up prices for berries and fresh vegetables. While crops remain plentiful now, a 24 hour rain is urged to restore production. Upstate growers report labor shortages as WPA wages deter pickers, with some offering $30 per month plus board.
Denver July 10. Carrot ships report strong demand for cabbage green beans and peas with fair demand for beets turnips and carrots. Cabbage paid producers 50 to 60 dollars per ton, beans per pound and peas 3 cents. Beets and carrots 25 cents per dozen, turnips 30 cents. Truckers hauling to eastern Colorado Nebraska Kansas and Oklahoma. Iceberg lettuce scarce locally but mountain vegetables available. iceberg sold in Denver 3 to 3.25 per crate.
In New York on July 10, the Agricultural Adjustment Administration said no one is authorized to advocate against any lawful marketing method. Secretary Herr cited discussions with J. W. Tapp and stated AAA does not favor or oppose any legal method of marketing. The acts assign responsibilities to cooperative associations, and the administration will continue to uphold them.
Los Angeles July 10 The California Valencia market remained steady as strike effects in Orange county were minimal. The distribution committee cut interstate prorate for the week starting July 12 to 1,300 cars from 1,400, with an expected 20,892 cars of Valencias to move to season's end. A recent injunction blocking intrastate prorates for ten shippers resurfaced, and the committee did not propose intrastate prorating, signaling possible inequities for 40 prorated shippers.
New York tradesmen and city officials met in Deputy Fire Commissioner Ciconi's office to discuss traffic problems and street congestion in the wholesale district. Representatives from Markets and Agriculture departments, Truck Men's Association, local unions, and police and fire officials attended. others were away. A July 16 hearing was set, preceded by a July 15 departmental briefing to align on moves to ease truck movement and reduce fire hazards in the fruit and produce area. Fred Geiger, Edo Schwitters, and Ward W. Smith attended.
Onions across Minnesota suffer from extreme heat and low moisture with potential 50 percent damage in the northwest from disease and heat. The southeast may ship 65 percent of last year’s crop if rain arrives within a week, but overall a shortage seems likely despite upcoming rainfall.
Macon Ga July 10 The Elberta peach deal began modestly this week with the first carload out of the belt last Friday. Movement eased after Hiley shipments peaked in late June. total shipments this week surpassed 3 000 cars for the season, slightly below last year. Weather boosted color, demand remained good, and experts expect the run to extend through August. Carloads fetched 90 cents to $1 in local markets, with larger, high quality fruit reaching higher prices. peak Georgia Belges reached $4.25 in New York.
July 10 New York reports extreme heat lifting California lemon prices at Thursday auction. Top fancy lemons reached about 8.76 per box after weaker early week prices near 6.50 to 6.75. Auctioned 62 cars showing strong demand amid ample supply. Valencia oranges remained active with 250 cars sold and prices mostly steady to slightly down for smaller sizes. Farley grades traded to 3.25 5 with some lots reaching 6.50. choice at 2.50 4.05.
The local cantaloupe shipping season is nearly over by end of next week as shipments fall sharply since July 3. Daily carloads of 30 are forecast, while market dullness yields a modest price uptick yesterday. Stronger wire inquiries emerged amid a demoralized prior market just after July 4.

In Western New York apples are the main crop and the harvest this year is likely to be well below normal. A hot spring cut blossoms after two to four days and frost in mid May damaged many fruits, with limited damage near Lakes Erie and Ontario. Dry May and June plus cool days and nights hasten maturation though moisture shortages persist. Overall production may reach about 35 percent of normal, down from 15 percent last year. In Hammond Louisiana on July 10 a copious rain ended a drought over the strawberry and vegetable belt. Hail accompanied the shower in scattered sections with minimal damage. First good rain since June 12 revived peppers and extended the crop several weeks. over 1,000 cars of vegetables have been shipped this season.
