Pre cooling a success in California orange trade

Pomona's pre cooling system marks a major advance in orange handling with a three day process cooling fruit to 38 degrees, enabling higher car packing, reduced decay, and better market prices. The Pomona Valley houses seventeen packing plants and a $2 million local output while connectivities with Santa Fe Southern Pacific and Salt Lake railways enable efficient national distribution. The program, led by Prof. G Harold Powell, demonstrates that careful cooling and rapid processing preserve fruit quality from field to eastern markets.
