Michigan May Get Lower Freight Rates
Grand Rapids July 3. E L Ewing general counsel for the Michigan Traffic League says pending railroad mergers like Pere Marquette with Nickel Plate and Ann Arbor with Wabash could lead to lower Michigan freight rates after Interstate Commerce Commission approval. He cites potential removal of zoning, estimates savings of over 1 million dollars yearly, and notes reduced rates for low fruits and vegetables by about two cents per cwt. Wabash/Manistee lines are cited as weaker, with stronger systems favored for future rate setting.
