Further Advance in Potatoes in Maine
Presque Isle Me January 23 The potato market shows a further advance with prices to farmers from 5.75 to 6.25 per barrel. Weather is cold with heavy snows and roads fair. Car shortage is serious as dealers sell New England 4.25 to 4.50 and New York 4.45 to 4.50 per cwt. Demand is active but loading table stock is light. much gear is used for seed stock. In Aroostook county prices last week ranged 5.50 to 6 per barrel for Green Mountains and 5.25 to 5.75 for Spaulding Rose and Cobblers. Indicated further rise was halted by car shortages. Farmers expect gains but shippers sell only what they can ship promptly. No relief in sight for car supply. most shipments are seed stock contracted in fall.
