Potatoes for Belgium Move Aims to Help Surplus Wheat
A Minnesota legislative resolution proposes shipping surplus 1914 potatoes to Belgians in place of wheat to aid relief while preserving domestic wheat supplies. The plan, urged by Elias Steenerson and likely to be introduced by John H. Boyd, calls for a state commission to collect and forward potatoes across the state with rail and warehouse support. The proposal notes 100 million bushels in surplus across several states and argues potatoes could feed more people for less cost than flour.
