Harlingen Tex Jan 14 Cabbage prices in south Texas rose this week from 10 to 12.50 per ton for growers last week to about 20 for the best stock midweek. Brighter Outlook in Imperial Valley Lettuce Deal
In Brawley California this week the Imperial valley lettuce market showed a brighter outlook with good demand. Prices for tours and fives hovered around 1.15 per crate with some sales to 1.20 and sixes at 90 cents as demand stayed moderate. Most fields are early and shipments are expected to ease slightly after catching up. Two weeks of ideal growing weather boosted rapid growth and large high quality sizes. Daily shipments last week exceeded 125 cars.

Early onion acreage higher in 1938 than 1937 harvest
Washington D C Jan 14 R estimates from the Bureau of Agricultural Economics show the preliminary 1938 early onion acreage in the southern states at 28 010 acres up from 24 550 in 1937 and above the 1928 32 average of 23 060. Louisiana acreage fell five percent while Texas rose sixteen percent and California fifteen percent. Planting began in southern parishes with sowing dated September 16 and transplanting December 24.

Heavy Cuban rains last week damaged tomatoes arriving Wednesday, depressing New York prices. Receipts near 86 000 lugs this week show a 20 000 lug surplus, with large sizes at 2.50 to 3.50 and smaller at 2.00 to 2.50. On Wednesday 41 000 lugs offered, quality disappointing and prices slid, most sales 2.25 to 2.50, with some marks 3.40 and many poorer goods 1.26 to 2.

Kansas City on January 14 report says produce handlers union members who had struck last Friday went back to work Wednesday under terms of the 1938 contract pending signing of a new one. Market functioned near normal during the stoppage with only some workers out and a schedule likely to be agreed soon. The market opens at 6 a.m. daily until a new labor pact is adopted.
