Chicago market reports lift in carrot potato prices as supply tightens. No. 1 round whites in Wisconsin Michigan reach $1.20 to $1.25, with brief top at $1.35 per cwt. Receipts light, buyers cautious, and growers reluctant to sell due to low prices.
California navel oranges shipments totaled 187 cars with generally good quality. Prices ranged from 2.26 to 7.20 dollars per box depending on grade, while lemons fell due to higher supply. Florida arrivals were ample but rail delays limited deliveries, with fancy Florida fruit selling to 6.50 per box and tangerines strong at 4.50 to 5.25 per half box.

Gerald Da Costa former managing director of the Fruit and Produce Exchange of Great Britain ltd and his brother Richard resign from the directorate and withdraw their business from the Exchange. George J. Webb of McCaig Webb Glasgow a director said a new managing director will be appointed after his London return in three four weeks. Webb noted progress in New York and Europe crops lines remained satisfactory despite apple season drawbacks.
St Paul February 25 The Minnesota potato market started the week stronger with better inquiry and heavier movement. United States No 1 and partly graded round whites sold at 9.5 to 9.95 per cwt while Bur banks and Ohios ranged 1.05 to 1.10 and 1.04, seed stock demand also rising. Irish Cobblers at 1.10 and mixed cars 1.80 to 2.0. Prices firm with no major changes through the week.
A Philadelphia Boosters gala featured costumed readings with George Hartzell as George Washington Meriam Lea Early Lip pincott as Martha Washington and Sarah Jones as the spinster. Dr Francis Harvey Greene and Rev Samuel Mc Williams spoke guests came from New York and Baltimore. A limerick contest awarded $50 to Mario Burley $30 to Mrs Thomas Phillips and $20 to Dr J J Cancelmo. The Corn Exchange Bank issued a trade roast magazine during the event.
New York cabbages remained plentiful and slow to sell as market quotes showed varied prices for seed, barrels, bags, and crates. Old domestic seed offered at 10 to 13 per ton, Danish seed 12 to 16 per ton, with upstate shippers at 7 to 9 per ton. Bales and crates ranged widely, Florida and South Carolina stock also cited with mixed quality and prices.
Stockton Calif Feb 25 The market for potatoes and onions is very quiet with little buying on the river Prices hold around 1 25 to 1 75 per bag for potatoes and about 40 cents per bag for onions Growers are buying seed such as Oregon American Wonders Bur banks and Garfield seed from the Sacramento district Seed prices range 2 10 to 2 50 per cwt depending on quality Shipments are light with practically nothing moving.
Chicago February 25 The sweet potato market held steady this week after last week’s price drop. Most stock was well packed and graded with ample supplies to meet demand. Fancy stock improved midweek, prices still below last week’s final quotations, and Tennessee hampers rose modestly. Jersey hampers ranged 2.50 to 2.75, Delaware 2, Tennessee 2.45, Illinois 2.25.
In San Benito Texas on February 25 growers and agents in the Lower Rio Grande Valley awaited railroad relief to widen distribution. High freight rates to Dallas Fort Worth St Louis and Nashville plus $90 refrigeration per car hinder cabbage movement. Cash prepayment required on out of state shipments, limiting shipments and depressing prices from 7.50 to 10 per ton fob. Early cabbage plowed up and late crops turned under as tomatoes beans squash and cucumbers approach ready for March and April movement.
On February 26 the South sa Company is expected to gain the exclusive express privilege over miles of railroads in the Railway System and the Ohio Railroad. The lines include 7 102 miles on Railway and other routes totaling 2 256 miles. From Washington to Richmond in the north to Atlanta Jacksonville and New Orleans in the south and to Cincinnati Louisville St. Louis and Memphis in the west. Seaports Norfolk Charleston Savannah Brunswick Mobile and centers at Birmingham Chattanooga Knoxville. Fruit and vegetable trade welcomes the move and hopes it breaks the express monopoly.
Houston produce men report railroads take the larger share of produce costs. Freight on a car of oranges exceeds the fruit’s invoice, while westbound outputs like apples and Western potatoes also show high charges. Cabbage from the Rio Grande Valley costs about $16 per ton delivered, nearly doubling the crop’s value. Farmers face rising costs and lower returns as freight and icing fees cut into profits.
Los Angeles Feb 25 R E Chapman jailed after a grape deal embezzlement conviction has applied for probation promising to repay part of the contract money. Estimates place unpaid advances around 50000 with about 30000 likely repayable if probation granted. Probation officer requests more time. hearing set for March 5. Partner Irving B Connor is in bail and to be tried soon. Broker Ed Ball released for lack of evidence maintains innocence.
Aroostook county potato holdings are below the original crop estimates due to heavy shrinkage from unusual conditions this year. About a quarter of the crop has been culled, leading to fewer cars of graded potatoes shipped by March 1. Movement is light amid very low prices. Seed movement improving. street prices around 11 to 11.25. Weather is excellent and roads good, but few shipments leave farms.
Mobile Ala Feb 26 With unusually favorable weather the cabbage crop here is thriving and quality and volume are expected to be among the best. Projections place total cars between 750 and 800 with early movement likely. Beans planting is slow but expected to pick up after frost risk passes, targeting about half normal acreage for the season.
A man posing as A J Payne of Reynolds Georgia duped a Miami trader of $110 with worthless checks in early January. The suspect, about 140 pounds and 30 years old, had a young child and claimed ties to Reynolds. He appeared January 3–5 at a Miami firm, showing a wife’s photo and promising peach shipments, then fled with a $45 cash advance on a Reynolds bank check before the scheme unraveled.
Chicago reports stronger onion market this week as colder weather, improved demand, and tighter supplies push prices up. Reds firming and nearly sold out in Wisconsin and Illinois. Indiana holdings reduced. Eastern greens see little new production. yellows at 80 to 85 cents, reds around 56 to 66 cents per hundredweight.
Jefferson City Mo Feb 24 The agricultural committee of the Missouri lower house endorsed a bill by Rep Miles Carroll county to license and bond commission merchants in eggs poultry butter hides furs and related farm products. The measure requires a 5000 bond and a license fee of one half of one percent of gross annual earnings with strict record keeping and broad inspection powers for the state marketing bureau.
Chicago trade groups announce a March 3 dinner dance at the Sherman Hotel at 6 30 p m to host a grand get together meeting with local and out of town members. Committee chairs include Frank F E Nellis Charles R Godding and E Percy Miller as toastmaster with talks by William Mors P E Wagner John Denney A H Welch and F E Nellis among others.
Washington report notes a proposed tax plan by Representative Longworth aiming to cut income surtaxes to 40 percent, abolish excess profits tax, and repeal several levies on freight, transportation, Pullman charges, and soft drinks. Direct corporate tax would rise from 10 to 15 percent with tighter exemptions. no sales tax expected.
Fort Worth Texas February week shows W Goldstein Produce and Commission Co still operating after a voluntary bankruptcy filing in early February. Creditors report offers around 12 percent on the dollar, while trade members seek full settlement. Company papers list assets near 15000 and liabilities near 15000 with exemptions claimed at 7500.

Pittsburgh, February 25. The second and final account of Koehler Produce Company, a fruit and vegetable firm, filed in Allegheny county Prothonotary's office shows an unaccounted $1,463.85 from the first statement. Auditor Houlden estimates after expenses, about $1,000 will be left for creditors, bringing total payments to slightly over 20 percent of debts.
Cincinnati telegraph reports a smooth imposter using the name L. G. Schmeling of Cadillac Michigan who posed as manager of the Michigan Potato Growers Exchange. He collected ten dollar sums from several traders in Ohio, including William M. Fisher & Sons Co in Columbus. A wire from Schmeling urged his arrest. he spoke convincingly about potatoes and referenced Onaway Michigan during chats with victims.
Minneapolis, Feb 25 Officials of Consumers' Service and Supply Company were indicted by a federal grand jury on conspiracy to use the mails to defraud. The firm allegedly defrauded Northwest farmers of more than 250000 by selling service contracts in 22 states, charging 13 to 17 dollars yearly, claiming to buy direct from factories and cut out middlemen.

New York February 25 market report notes dull activity with little or no price change across onion grades. White onions sold about 1.25 per 100 pound bag, red and yellow varieties around 1.50 to 2.50 per half case, and Spanish onions quoted at 4.5 per case or equivalent.
Los Angeles Feb 26 The Mexican tomato crop grows slowly due to late planting and cold nights in the Los Mochis Valley with shipments not heavy until the second week in March. Output may reach 750 to 800 cars with 60 to 77 cars shipped by late February, mainly from the Presidio and Villa Union districts near Mazatlan.
Creditors of Sweeny Brothers produce commission merchants in Savannah met after Edgar O Oetgen, a convicted swindler, joined the firm on salary. Oetgen, previously jailed in Cairo and linked to swindling shipments in Atlanta, allegedly used a list and circulars to prey on shippers. The brothers, inexperienced in produce, faced significant debts despite a decent local reputation.
Washington D C Feb 25 The Senate passed an agricultural appropriation bill carrying about 41 million dollars for the department for the year starting July 1 This is roughly 9 million more than the current year and about 6 million more than the House allowed It includes 198 500 for investigations of insects affecting deciduous fruits and 60 000 for tropical fruit pests and camphor thrips in cooperation with the Federal Horticultural Board An additional 120 000 was appropriated for investigations of insects affecting truck crops and those in storage
In Chicago on Feb 25 strawberries showed a quieter market as demand waned and receipts rose. Much of the new stock was poor or soft and moved slowly. prices declined 5 to 10 cents per quart from last week, with fancy Florida freezer fruit around 50 cents and the Soo and poorer lots selling at lower, uncertain levels.
