The Chicago egg market held firm with only small price shifts as demand remained solid and supplies balanced. Receipts through the week were light to moderate, congestion hindered movement, and prices traded around 40 to 41 cents for firsts with futures and spot sales reflecting modest declines and subsequent firming.
Preparations for the National League of Commission Merchants twenty-fifth annual Jubilee convention are underway in Chicago. The Congress Hotel will host the event, with meetings scheduled January 2, 10 and 11. Frank Wagner of G M H Wagner & Sons heads the executive committee as it completes committee appointments and finalizes preliminary arrangements. Local merchants have begun early work to ensure a highly successful gathering.
Kansas City report estimates show 50 to 65 percent as many barreled apples in the United States as last year with about 20 percent more boxes. Combined holdings suggest 66 to 70 percent of prior stocks, while Washington and Oregon show heavy stocks. Several cars were later reported arriving at stations that previously had none.
Heavy rains in California have not delayed orange shipments ahead of Orange Day on March 10 while vegetables faced some weather delays. Los Angeles lettuce sizing and solidity lagged, Imperial Valley lettuce improved in size and texture, and shipments may be about 410 cars this week despite wind delays. Cabbage in Southern California remains in demand though weather has softened the crop. 850 beds under cansons at Signal Hill are expected to yield 200 cars or more.
Chicago February 23 The live poultry market showed little interest with minimal trading as high prices reduced demand. Offerings were light and values steady, mainly local buyers absorbing light arrivals. Dressing trade called less, storage stock being drawn due to high prices. Receipts were small early week. prices held steady at unchanged levels. Fowls sold around 19 1 4 cents, springs at 20 cents, ducks 22 cents, turkeys 23 cents, guinea hens 3 1 2 dollars per dozen.
Chicago February 23 The Chicago Potato Dealers Association will hold a banquet on March 3 at the Planters Hotel. The group, formed years ago, includes nearly all Chicago pota to industry interests. The event is a stag affair with a lively program promised by entertainment chair Allan Ry Gibson and the secretary. California Vegetable Shipments Reported in Los Angeles With 3 587 Cars so far this season daily totals show February 15 six and a half cars February 16 six cars February 17 and 18 thirty cars February 19 thirteen cars February 20 twenty seven cars.

In Seattle on Feb 23 jobbers began quoting Yakima No. 1 Baking Gems at 85 dollars and predicted a quick rise to 100. Yakima holders refused 20 dollars f o b and said they would fetch 100 at shipping points before the spring cleanup.
Chicago Feb 23 Onions rose as central states red stock traded at 12 per 100 pounds and yellows at 14 f o b loading station. Western stock quoted mainly 12 13.50 delivered Chicago. Demand remains good given the high market level. Dealers buy for immediate needs but will seek more when supply tightens.
Funeral services for the late James M Fanning were held last Saturday at St. Patrick's Church after a ceremony at his home. Executed wills name Joseph Flaherty and Miss Margaret Moran as executors. charitable institutions and relatives receive the estate valued at $375,000 personal and $125,000 real estate. Perishable stocks are being disposed of. Maherty departs Honduras, then executors consult with attorneys to decide future disposition of the estate.
The will and codicil reveal bequests to relatives and churches totaling $281 and $1,500 to the Polish Church for losses from a bank closing. James M. Fanning also leaves $2,000 to William Graham and arranges the Sacramento poultry business to continue as J. Brinker & Sons on Pike Street. Fanning, Pittsburgh sudden death, was Earl Fruit Company secretary treasurer and involved with Producers Fruit Company in Sacramento.
Fresno, Calif. February 28 The case of H. Homsy versus Peter Maljan charging embezzlement of 3900 went to trial in Fresno last Saturday. Maljan, indicted by the grand jury in October, was convicted and faces a possible one to ten year state prison sentence. The case has been appealed to the San Francisco Superior Court, delaying further hearings for months. Previously, Maljan Brothers failed for 57,000 in debt prior to bankruptcy. Last year he operated in Fresno as Maljan Brothers & Co, now has an office in the Hollingsworth Building in Los Angeles and a store on the Los Angeles market.
