Chicago Dealer Sues C and O for 1081 05 in Refrigeration Charge Case
Thomas Smith of Chicago files with the Interstate Commerce Commission against the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway alleging unreasonable refrigeration charges on apples shipped from Crozet Virginia to Chicago in 1912 and 1913. He says 10 cents per hundred pounds was charged regardless of ice quantity, and that cars sometimes carried three tons of ice. He seeks 1081.65 in damages, arguing a $2.50 per ton rate would be fair and that shippers be allowed to furnish initial icing.
