The controversy centers on about $125000 in ex cepts of work charges and over 100 cars received that week. Emerson’s affidavit lists about four dozen affidavits from independent receivers and jobbers, including W H Monergon Son J Smith Richardson Co Thomas Bingham Co and others. Adler’s shocking claim says at a meeting June 10 Samuel Werner declared himself king of the poultry business and that his word and prices govern all. District Attorney Whitman appointed Deford to lead the new investigation into the poultry trust after prior milk-trust probes.
James T. Mulhall, famed crook, pleaded guilty before Judge Morris in a Baltimore federal court and was sentenced to six months. He previously operated butter egg and poultry schemes, profiting around $20,000 in Hagerstown and causing losses to many shippers. The Packer exposed his dealings, aiding post office inspectors who pursued Mulhall through Venice to Leavenworth, where earlier terms were served.
Arlie J. Davis Pleads guilty in federal court to using the mails for fraudulent butter and produce deals. Sentenced to sixteen months in Leavenworth Federal Prison. Davis, formerly in Philadelphia and the East, operated a Madison produce house with high butter and egg quotations, sending checks that proved valueless. Two assistants eluded arrest as post office officials gather evidence of past schemes.
Kansas City reports a rapid rise in egg movement since mid January with unusually cold December and January delaying production. The Southwest and Arkansas Oklahoma Texas shipments have started late but now surge toward eastern markets. Dealers fear April storage may shift earlier and affect spring supplies. prices varied as current receipts and future deliveries traded in modest ranges.
The orange situation in California remains discouraging with the week showing little change in market conditions. Sales barely cover delivery costs to eastern markets, while high class frost-free fruit and guaranteed shipments fetch good prices. Southern California shipments total 5,299 cars, including 1,050 lemons, with last year’s season higher. Estimated storage over 300 lemon cars in California compares to about 1,400 a year earlier.
Chicago dealers were surprised to learn of a proposed city ordinance to regulate the sale of cold storage products. The measure will come up for consideration next week.
Brownsville reports about 15 cars of cabbage shipped from Southwest Texas this week with next week’s forecast around 20 cars. Track price ranges from 1.00 to 1.40 per crate. Corpus Christi notes Southwest Texas may ship 40 cars this week. cabbage valued near 1.25 this week with a projected 1.20 next week as crop remains smaller than reported.
San Antonio reports Roy Campbell of the Southern Texas Truck Growers Association says cold weather slowed onion maturation by about two weeks. He expects movement to start around March 15 with a heavier March trade than ever. Bermuda onion crop size similar to last year. Butter market declines then firm. creamery specials at 28.5 cents. Tower grades down. packing stock heavy at 20 cents. Demand limited. storage firsts scarce, best grades selling 26 to 27 cents.
New York reports light dressed poultry receipts and a dull market, while fowls over five pounds fetch 18½ cents and smaller birds around 18¢. Capons and turkeys show weakness with limited demand. live poultry prices rise modestly as frozen stock moves slowly.

New York February reports show storage holdings easing in 32 warehouses with 183,475 cases on February 1, down from January 1. Egg prices fell from 29 to 27 1/2 cents as cold weather delayed deliveries, then improved with western shipments increasing. Weekly trading saw mixed results with calls and futures slipping, Missouri Indiana and Illinois firsts at various cents per dozen, and overall market barely steady at week’s close.
Chicago on February 11 reports Increased creamery butter receipts, with prices cut by one cent to make extra size. Market remains weak but slow to drop. Thursday and Friday shows unchanged prices. This week receipts total 4,332 packages, more than double the year-ago volume and about 25 percent above last week, hinting at cheaper butter next season if the trend continues.
