Cold western temperatures steadied egg prices in Chicago as fresh and storage eggs moved, storage stock drawn down and demand steady. Monday to Friday saw firm quotes with fresh firsts around 29 cents, storage firsts 18 to 20 cents, and April bids 19 to 22 cents amid limited receipts and stronger storage activity.
The Chicago market for California navels and Florida oranges remains firm with light coast rivals. Fancy small sizes quoted at 3.25 to 3.35 per carlot. northern navels pale. Florida oranges in good demand with prices around 2.25 to 2.50. slight decay noted but overall quality good. Grapefruit steady with auction values near 2.75 to 3.25 per box. lemons in good shape at 1.50 to 3.85.
California citrus shipments from southern California in the last week totaled 835 cars with 735 oranges and 100 lemons. The season totals reach 4,840 cars from this district, plus 4,331 from the Tulare district and 624 from Butte county, with the state grand total at 9,785 cars for the season.
New York letter dated February 1, 1916 requests publication of a correction to an January 23 editorial quotation from the American Agriculturist. The writer notes space constraints and explains why the full editorial was not quoted, referencing the Fruit Auction Company and the Department of Foods and Markets. Bertucci & Co of Gulfport and Biloxi issued a general letter to creditors stating they cannot meet obligations in full and propose a 10 percent settlement. New York reports a sharp drop in apple exports for the week ending February 4 with 4 790 barrels shipped versus 66 077 a year ago for the same week. Season totals through last Saturday stand at 1 046 935 barrels compared with 1 989 305 barrels in the previous season. Boxes are counted as three to the barrel.
Washington Feb. 4 Representative W J Cary of Wisconsin introduced a bill to bar interstate sale or transport of food held in cold storage beyond set periods. Poultry beef pork veal and other items have time limits, with penalties including heavy fines or penitentiary terms. Protests already filed by cold storage interests as the measure goes to the agriculture committee.
Information from the Federal Horticultural Board in Washington states an investigation is under way to decide if the embargo on Irish potatoes will be lifted. War disease still affects European stock, but districts in Ireland free of the disease may be allowed into the United States, with public notice if a change occurs. A Boston cable reports Great Britain faces shipping difficulties and higher costs if trade with Ireland resumes, Scotland producing ample potatoes but prices and logistics hindering export.

Eagle Lake Texas February 4 The potato farmers report a record planting season with all land plowed and seed in the ground. Much seed is native but a large portion comes from other states. Weather is ideal, seed quality high, and planting continues in Wharton Simonton and nearby points.
