Lettuce Growers Cut February Acreage Amid Supply Shortage
El Centro Calif Feb 3 A sharp reduction in iceberg lettuce supplies for the remainder of February follows an acreage reduction and shipping curtailment program agreed by shippers owning 95 percent of the land. About two thirds of February plantings will be harvestable. continued reductions into March depend on Salt River Valley shipper arrangements. Loading halted Thursday and today with resume on Saturday. Sunday cuts and loads are avoided. Imp Valley and Yuma Valley join the program, restricting nearly all fields except one Imperial Valley block. Market response includes higher FOB values from $1 to $1.50 and Chicago carlot bids rising to 2.75 due to cold weather and slow growth.
