Advises Growers to Feed Potatoes to Livestock
Manton Michigan December 29 Potatoes at current grower prices are more valuable as feed for hogs and cattle than for market. Supt James Stack of the rural agriculture potato council notes thousands of bushels are stored on farms. Potatoes can feed cattle sheep and horses in limited amounts and should be cooked for swine. Experiments show mixed feeding with corn meal yields gains and potato feeding can substitute for corn meal. Raw potatoes alone won t sustain pigs but small amounts help health. Remove sprouts as they contain solanine. Many bushels may be fed to livestock for better returns than selling at market rates.
