Commercial Apple Crop Returns Near Last Season
Washington December 28 In reports as of December 1 the Agriculture Department estimates the total apple production in 1934 at 119 355 000 bushels. This is about 16 percent smaller than the 142 981 000 bushels in 1933 and about 23 percent below the five year (1927 1931) average of 186 203 000. Since 1918 only the 1921 and 1927 crops exceeded the 1934 preliminary level. The December 1 estimate of the orchard crop has been raised from the November 1 figure and stands at 4 460 000 bushels, about 1 percent greater than the 1933 crop but about 22 percent below the average. New York December 38. After a two year probe and a December indictment on three counts of using the mafia to defraud Herbert Geil’s case opened in U S District Court and was postponed to January 7. The scheme allegedly opened firms with similar names to trusted firms to ship goods, then sell for cash while creditors lost. Names include Standard Commodities Company Royal Importing Company Reliant Supply Company Lowell Sales Company Ideal Merchandise Company and Regel Equipment Company. Geil allegedly operated since nine years ago with letters on various letterheads to obtain goods and credit. Names tied to the scheme include France Milling Cobleskill Farabee Hay and Grain Memphis Pecan and Walnut. Attorney Louis F Glaser and post office inspector William T Roensegaard aided the case. Joseph B Martin of the U S Attorney’s office leads the prosecution.

Death of Mrs Bertha Merkel of Chicago
Mrs Bertha Merkel wife of Julius Merkel of Merkel Brothers Company died Saturday after a long illness. She was mother to Karl Laula Austin and Jule Merkel and sister in law to William Merkel. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at their home 6119 Crystal Street and burial followed at Mount Emblem Cemetery. Merkel Brothers Company held a closed funeral. New legislation expected in Washington to broaden AAA authority clarify licensing powers and widen scope of marketing agreements.
